Press Release
Planning to provide high tech telematics services such as Nate Drive in GM Daewoo vehicles in 2008.
Through a 7-inch wide screen installed in vehicles, real time traffic information, road guides, and diverse wireless Internet services including Melon and Cizle can be used.
Lower costs in comparison to other vehicle manufacturers as user’s mobile phone can be used directly.
On October 18, SK Telecom established an agreement with GM Daewoo Auto and Technology (hereunder referred to as "GM Daewoo") at its head office in Euljiro 2-ga, Jung-gu, Seoul for a partnership in development and commercialization of telematics systems.
The telematics system to be jointly developed by the two companies provides Nate Drive services, which gives real time traffic information and optimum road guides through a 7-inch wide screen installed within the vehicle, as well as wireless Internet services such as Cizle (movie information and reservation service) and Melon (music content service) through voice and screen.
The most important feature of the system is that customers need not be subject to the inconvenience of purchasing a separate exclusive handset and pay a subscription fee and base fee each month. The customer may use his/her own existing mobile phone, making low costs the greatest advantage of the telematics service.
With the goal of commercialization in 2008, the two companies agreed to have GM Daewoo develop the hardware, including the navigation module, and SK Telecom develop the various software and run the telematics center.
Managing Director Lim Gyu-Gwan, head of SK Telecom’s Solution Business Division, remarked, "Through years of business experience in Nate Drive, our expertise in running telematics services has already been proven. We will do our best to heighten the convenience of customers of GM Daewoo vehicles in using traffic information services."
Managing Director Yoo Chang-Sun of GM Daewoo Technology Research Center remarked, "Automobiles are no longer simply means of transportation. They are transforming into a moving cultural space. If the high tech telematics system developed jointly by the two companies is applied to the high-performance, high quality GM Daewoo vehicles, people will be able to fully enjoy the joy of driving. With the joint development agreement of the two companies, GM Daewoo will step up cooperation with other industries to develop better cars that customers desire."
