SK telecom will continue to contribute to the Growth of the digital music market Through constant investment in musical resources.
SK Telecom announced that ’Melon’, a wired and wireless integrated music portal which opened in November of 2004, now has over four million subscribers. The number of paying subscribers who enjoy streaming music downloading services with a monthly flat rate, increased to over 600,000. This indicates that the paid system is taking root in the Korean digital music market.
An SK Telecom official revealed that this remarkable result was achieved because a ubiquitous music portal-based flat rate rental type music service model has become very popular with the customers. This has created a positive feedback from the music market which was suffering difficulties due to the illegal reproduction of MP3 files. Through this service, music copyright holders will be compensated in a systematic and transparent manner. In this regard, Melon is promoting the general music market, as well as strengthening the win-win partnership among music copyright holders, service providers and customers.
Melon is providing a "Cutting Bell" service designed to let customers create cellular bell sounds on their own, and then enjoy music by downloading it from the Melon music portal. This service is becoming increasingly popular among the younger generation customers who like having their own unique bell sound.
In addition, on the 14th of December Melon opened "Melon Shop", a shopping mall in which customers can purchase almost everything related to music in a one-stop manner. This includes MP3 players, CDs, tickets for musical performances, a variety of musical accessories, etc. Melon Shop offers a more convenient shopping service to music lovers.
The Melon service, in which customers can enjoy the music through the Internet and mobile phone, has established strategic partnerships with domestic MP3 player makers. In this regard, customers can now enjoy the music through such MP3 players as Cowon Systems’ iaudio, Samsung’s YEPP, Reigncom’s iriver and iops. SK Telecom plans to extend the scope of the Melon service support devices to PDAs and PMPs other than the MP3 player.
Seung Yoon Ahn, head of SK Telecom’s Content Business Division, stated, "SK Telecom will continue to contribute to the growth in the digital music market through constant investment in musical resources. This includes support for production of new singers’ albums, and the operation of a music fund". He also added, "We will offer a service that perfectly fits the customers’ needs and taste, by introducing personalized music services and community oriented services other than music content. We will also make the utmost effort to solidify Melon’s position as the best music portal in the marketplace."
