Press Release
SK Telecom, Korea’s largest mobile telecommunications provider, is introducing a variety of space-age wireless Internet services using CDMA2000 1X EV-DO (hereinafter "EV-DO"), currently the fastest wireless network in the world. The public will be able to experience these services at ITU Telecom Asia 2002, held in Hong Kong from December 2-to-7, 2002.
SK Telecom will demonstrate cutting-edge wireless internet services that can be provided anytime, anywhere, and with any device under the theme "WITH(Wireless Internet Telecommunications for Humans) SK Telecom". More details follow:
· SK Telecom at ITU2002
Visitors to SK Telecom’s booth in Hall 1 of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre will have a first-hand experience of the world’s first wireless Internet service. The Service is designed to enhance the value-added of existing wireless networks by overcoming the limitations of existing voice message and SMS services.
· Experience the potential of 3G
Visitors can experience the technological prowess of Korea’s mobile telecommunications industry through video-image phones using a 1X EV-DO network, which can transmit data at a maximum speed of 2.4Mbps. SK Telecom will also introduce the world’s first mobile-only film, the mobile-only singer NOEL, and its 3G-multimedia service "June", which was launched in Korea on November 25, 2002.
· SK Telecom demonstrates a variety of wireless Internet solutions
At the event, SK Telecom will also introduce video-image mail telecommunications, photographing and transmission, GPS-based services, solutions for subways, ATMs and vending machines, and a payment system which replaces credit cards. Most of the wireless Internet services, which will be introduced during the event, have already been put into use in Korea through high-speed wireless networks and terminals. The dynamism of the services shows how Korea’s telecommunications market has continued to grow rapidly, unlike those in the US or Europe, where telecommunication services providers face limitations in ARPU, which led to a lackluster performance in terms of profits.
· A vision for tomorrow
Korea’s largest mobile telecommunications provider will also present a future vision of mobile telecommunications technology under the theme "Realization of Network Accessible Anytime, Anyplace, and with Any Device." That is, in addition to cellular phones, SK Telecom will display wireless Internet services through PDAs and VMTs.
During the event, four members of SK Telecom, which include Mr. Lee Myung Sung, Director of SK Telecom’s Network R&D Center, will participate in forums to introduce the level of mobile telecommunications technology in Korea to IT industry participants from throughout the world.
Background:
In an effort to transfer the focus of its business from the voice-centered to data-centered mobile telecommunications, SK Telecom commercialized a CDMA2000 1X network (with the maximum speed of 156.3Kbps) and a 1X EV-DO network (with the maximum speed of 2.4Mbps) in October 2000 and January 2000, respectively. The company is continuing to develop new wireless Internet services and mobile phone terminals in close cooperation with relevant partners.
Through such efforts, SK Telecom has successfully accumulated cutting-edge know-how and wireless Internet solutions for CDMA network operations. The company currently enjoys a 53% share of Korea’s wireless telecom market with more than 17 million subscribers. In addition to exporting wireless Internet technologies to Israel, it has also made a significant contribution to the expansion of CDMA to Mongolia, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
According to SK Telecom CEO Pyo, Moon Soo, "The Hong Kong exhibition will be a good opportunity to show that we are the world’s No.1 in the relevant technology, as well as to establish cooperative relations with businesses engaged in platform and network businesses. We’re prepared to make the event a turning point in our effort to advance into the world markets including China."
In July 2002, SK Telecom signed an MOU with China Unicom for the establishment of a joint venture bolstering mutual relations for cooperation in the wireless Internet sector, which was first formed in the sector for CDMA-type mobile telephone services. Through the joint venture, the two companies are currently discussing methods for mutual cooperation in the establishment of standards and specification for platforms, establishment of platforms, development of new services, and methods of contents supply.
SK Telecom is now trying to be a friendly partner satisfying the needs of people in the global village, being equipped with cutting-edge mobile telecommunications technologies, and introducing a variety of solutions for the creation of new sources of profits to telecommunications providers in the world.
