SK Telecom Cooperates with Global Telecom Operators in the Building of a Roaming System

  • SK Telecom signed an MOU with Freemove, an alliance of the number one telecom operators in Europe, in order to expand the WCDMA roaming system.

  • The company is aligned with Bridge Mobile Alliance in the building of the world`s largest single roaming belt which will have a total of 450 million mobile phone subscribers in 38 countries worldwide.

Mr. K, who is on his way to Europe on a business trip, checked short text messages and multimedia messages transmitted from Korea through his mobile phone. He then made cellular calls to his Head Office in Korea without using international call access numbers or country codes. Now SK Telecom customers are allowed to send and receive short text and multimedia messages anywhere on the globe, including Europe and Asia. In addition, they are able to use mobile phone service in foreign countries using almost the same methods and environment they use in Korea. The roaming includes such value- added services as a Caller Identification Service and a Contracted Dialing Service.

Seoul, Korea, 11 June 2007 - SK Telecom (CEO Shin Bae Kim, www.sktelecom.com) announced that it has expanded  a WCDMA roaming system to the entire world as it signed an MOU with Freemove, an alliance of number one telecom operators in Europe . This agreement was designated as the “Bridge Mobile Alliance (BMA)” that SK Telecom joined in February 2007 when an MOU with Freemove was signed and SK Telecom was officially included as a contracting party in the MOU. As a result of being aligned with BMA and Softbank Mobile of Japan, SK Telecom has built a cooperative roaming belt which has a total of 450 million mobile phone subscribers in 38 countries worldwide. The roaming belt connects Asia, Europe and America.

 

Established in 2003, Freemove (www.freemovealliance.com) is the largest roaming alliance in Europe . It is composed of the number one mobile service providers in most of the major European countries. These include Orange of France, T-Mobile of Germany, Telecom Italia Group of Italy and Teliasonera of Sweden as well as their subsidiary companies. They have about 300 million subscribers in 28 countries across the world.

 

 Freemove is poised to provide corporate clients and customers of member companies with the same international roaming services they use in domestic countries. SK Telecom, as a member of Freemove, will facilitate customer convenience in using the WCDMA roaming service by offering high-speed data, video calls and multimedia messaging services.
