Currently SK Telecom has over two million mobile phone subscribers in Vietnam through its S-Fone business. With a firm commitment to assuming social responsibilities as a faithful corporate citizen in the global community, SK Telecom, jointly with Smile for Children, is proactively carrying out a variety of social contribution activities in Vietnam. Notably SK Telecom has now given the precious gift of surgery to Vietnamese children with facial deformities, over the twelve years since 1996,. In this year, the company will visit Nghe An. This well-known city is the home town of Hochimin.
The Vietnam government has been asking the global community to support Vietnamese children with facial deformities, called "Uncheongi". This emerged as a hot issue throughout the Vietnamese society in the mid 1990s. In response to this, SK Telecom and the ‘Smile for Children; participated in these medical support activities for the first time in Asia. This is how the "Free Surgery Activity for Vietnamese Children with Facial Deformities" started. SK Telecom has offered this loving medical care in Vietnam since May of 1996. A total of about 2,500 children with facial deformities have regained their smile, as well as new lives, through these surgeries.
In addition to free surgeries, SK Telecom opened the 4th SK Telecom library in Hochimin City Library on May 29th to foster a series of community care activities in Vietnam
The establishment of SK Telecom libraries started in 2006 with the aim of promoting a systematic education system in Vietnam where there is a high demand and desire for high-caliber education, but where there currently is a poor education system and environment. The company is making concerted efforts to provide Vietnam’s promising university students with a better education system and program that is focused on laying a solid foundation for growth within the Vietnamese community. In 2007 SK Telecom plans to open eight SK Telecom libraries, and invest a total of USD320,000 in supporting eleven libraries based in Hochimin, Hanoi, Danang and Hifong.
"Our community care activities in Vietnam stay focused on supporting the community in solving fundamental problems on a mid- and long-term basis, rather than using temporary supports. These initiatives are in keeping with our social contribution activities in Korea. Together with our business in Vietnam, SK Telecom will continue to strive to create new kinds of value in communities, thereby promoting win-win partnerships with Vietnam" said Joong Rae Cho, head of SK Telecom’s PR Office.
