Press Release
On March 26, Helio, SK Telecom’s joint venture in the U.S., held a press conference to unveil “Ocean”, the world’s first dual slide handset. The first public glimpse of the new technology took place at the CTIA Wireless 2006 expo in Orlando, Florida.
Ocean, the fifth new handset launched by Helio, will be released in the first half of this year. It features both vertical and horizontal opening. A user-friendly ’QWERTY’ keypad lets users conveniently compose and transmit e-mail and SMS, and access wireless Internet functions. The numeric and text-enabled keypad allows for easy cellular-phone calling and instant messaging.
In addition, Ocean supports an HTML Browser function that displays websites the same way they appear on the Internet. Users’ email, text messages, photo messages and Instant Messages are conveniently located all in one spot, and are just a touch away.
Ocean’s 2.4-inch, 260K-color high-resolution QVGA display, external stereo speakers and stereo Bluetooth support bring to life Helio’s suite of target-right content and custom-built services. Whether listening to tracks downloaded over the air from Helio Music, playing 3D or multiplayer games, taking pictures on the go and posting them to MySpace, or utilizing built-in GPS technology for Google Maps for mobile or Buddy Beacon, Ocean keeps members in touch with their friends better than ever before. Ocean also optimizes music playback for an estimated 15 hours of continuous audio.
The suggested retail price of Ocean is $295 US, aiming at the high-end market. Helio also markets a wide range of handsets with various functions and price ranges, including the economical Heat model and the mid- to upper-range Hero, Kickflip and Drift.
Hero and Kickflip, released in May of 2006, feature unique designs and support various wireless Internet functions. They have been instrumental in boosting the popularity of Helio’s services in the US market. Drift, introduced by Helio in November of 2006, was the company’s first Samsung Electronics product. With a built-in GPS, Drift allows for location-based services such as Google Maps and Buddy Beacon. Heat, released in February this year, is a value product that lets customers enjoy all of Helio’s services at an affordable price.
“We have been developing Ocean since before we launched Helio’s services in the US. It is a revolutionary handset that embodies Korea’s cutting-edge IT technological leadership, and I am sure that it will create a great sensation in the American market,” said Won-hee Sull, president and COO of Helio. He added, “Helio’s goal is to reach 250,000 subscribers by the end of this year. With our upcoming launches of innovative new wireless services and strong lineup of handsets, I am sure we will achieve and surpass that target.”
