SK Telecom pursues creation of new businesses, collective procurement of handsets, extension of WCDMA automatic roaming, and development of new 3G services jointly with BMA member companies.
SK Telecom announced on February 13th that with the aim of strengthening global competitiveness in the 3G market, it joined the ’Bridge Mobile Alliance’ (BMA) that includes the number one mobile communications operators in Asia.
Bang Hyung Lee, executive vice-president and head of SK Telecom’s Mobile Network Operator Business Group, met with Lim Chuan Poh, CEO of SingTel International, and chairman of the BMA. This took place at the 3GSM World Congress 2007 in Barcelona, Spain. They discussed WCDMA cooperation between SK Telecom and SingTel International. At the same time, executive vice-president Lee submitted SK Telecom’s application for BMA membership.
The BMA is composed of nine mobile communications operators that are number one companies in major Asian countries, and boasts strong solidarity among its members. These include SingTel of Singapore, Maxis of Malaysia, Bharti Airtel of India , Telkomsel of Indonesia, and CTM of Macau, among others.
Since its establishment in November 2004, the BMA has recorded remarkable mobile subscriber growth rates. The average growth rate has reached over 80% a year. The total number of member companies’ subscribers is expected to reach 200 million by the end of 2007. Notably a total of eight member companies are each providing WCDMA to 2 million subscribers. The total number of the member companies’ WCDMA subscribers is expected to increase to 60 million, in 2007.
SK Telecom, as a member of the BMA, plans to enhance its complementary alliances with other BMA member companies, as well as increase inbound roaming sales in the 3G mobile service sector. Most notably, the company will extend WCDMA service coverage by providing subscribers with a total roaming package. this will ease the burden of roaming service rates through the introduction of a variety of affordable rate plans.
SK Telecom will step up its efforts to give substantial benefits to subscribers by carrying out collective procurement of handsets and developing new 3G services in joint efforts with member companies. In addition, the roaming call quality will be greatly improved through the establishment of a joint response system to respond to call interferences.
Executive vice-president Bang Hyung Lee commented, “The current mobile communications industry is characterized by WCDMA-centered technology standardization. This reality strengthens cooperative ties between mobile operators. SK Telecom plans to build a solid 3G roaming belt in the Asian region while enhancing global partnerships with other BMA member companies in Europe and the U.S.”
