Press Release
WCDMA voice call and video telephony call services are now available in France and Italy.
the Commercial WCDMA Automatic roaming service will be Expanded to Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands by the end of This year.
SK Telecom announced the launch of its WCDMA Automatic Roaming Service in Italy and France on November 23rd in a joint effort with TIM, the number one mobile service provider in Italy, and SFR, the second largest mobile communications carrier in France. This has great significance due to the fact that SK Telecom will launch the WCDMA roaming service in Europe, where a CDMA Automatic Roaming Service is not available.
Like the existing CDMA Automatic Roaming service, SK Telecom subscribers traveling to these countries can now send and receive WCDMA cellular calls while using the same number and handset (SCH-W120) they used in Korea. SK Telecom’s video telephony roaming service is currently available in France. This service will also be introduced into Italy by the end of this year.
Last June SK Telecom launched a commercial WCDMA Automatic Roaming Service (including a video telephony roaming service) in Japan in a joint effort with Vodafone k.k. The company also released the same service in Hong Kong last July, and in Singapore last August. The company is steadily expanding this commercial service area into countries in which a number of Korean travelers and businesspersons visit.
To date, SK Telecom is offering the CDMA Automatic Roaming Service in a total of 17 countries that include the U.S., China, Thailand, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. In addition, the company is providing a rental roaming service in about 160 countries worldwide. By the end of this year, SK Telecom plans to introduce a commercial WCDMA Automatic Roaming Service in Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands. This will further strengthen the company’s global roaming service throughout the world.
WCDMA Automatic Roaming Service rates ranging from approximately KRW 1,240 in the off-peak time period, to KRW 1,890 per minute in the peak time period, will be charged when someone makes international voice calls, or video telephony calls, to Korea from France. When one is making local calls in France, voice call service rates ranging from about KRW 484 to KRW 1,981 per minute will be charged. The video telephony call charge ranges from KRW 484 to KRW 892 per minute. When receiving voice calls from Korea, about KRW 432 per minute will be charged. For the video telephony call service, about KRW 1,800 per minute will be charged. When one is using the service in Italy, about KRW 3,702 per minute will be charged when making calls to Korea, and about KRW 622 will be charged when making local calls. When receiving calls from Korea, about KRW 432 will be charged (based on the 1 Euro= KRW 1,260 exchange rate).
SK Telecom is currently offering the commercial WCDMA service in Seoul, and plans to stretch the service coverage to the metropolitan area and major cities by the end of this year. The company also plans to extend the service area to 84 cities nationwide by the second half of 2006. The number of SK Telecom’s Automatic Roaming Service users reached 560,000 in 2003, and 1.12 million in 2004. The number is expected to greatly increase every year, as it has already reached 1.7 million so far this year.
