A Gartner’s report revealed the success of SK Telecom’s Cyworld and Mobile Cyworld
to celebrate mobile Cyworld users hitting the one million mark, SK telecom will hold a variety of promotion events for existing users as well as new users.

SK Telecom announced that `Mobile Cyworld` has now grown to over one million users. This service lets users enjoy their mini homepage related content by connecting with the NATE, wireless Internet service, or downloading the content in the VM format. Mobile Cyworld is considered to be one of the best wired and wireless combined services.
SK Telecom announced on XX that ’Mobile Cyworld’ which was launched on March 29th, 2004, has now grown to over one million users.
This notable outcome was achieved just one year and five months after the launch of the service. It also has been only six months since its accumulated users reached over 500,000, in February of this year.
The Mobile Cyworld service lets users enjoy their mini homepage related content by connecting with the NATE, wireless Internet service, or downloading the content in the Virtual Machine (VM) format. SK Telecom has been strengthening a combined wired and wireless function since July of last year. This includes the transmission of real-time short-messages upon registering new text on mini-homepages, and letting users reply to a mini- homepage’s visiting books or photo albums. With these efforts, Mobile Cyworld has created a great sensation among mobile phone users. The number of users reaches over 600,000 each month.
An SK Telecom official revealed that Mobile Cyworld’s remarkable growth has great significance because it has laid a solid foundation for the success of wired and wireless combined business models in the marketplace. To date, the importance of wired and wireless combined services e.g. mobile knowledge search, is increasing. In particular, the number of wired and wireless combined music portal ’Melon’ service users hit the two million mark last June.
On August 4th, Gartner, a world’s prominent IT market researcher, analyzed and documented the success of SK Telecom’s Cyworld and Mobile Cyworld in a report titled ’Cyworld shows the way a mobile communications operator can gain profits from community services’.
In the report, Gartner predicted that the mobile community will be an important profit source as well as a tool for securing customer loyalty, for mobile communications operators. It also commented that mobile service operators should stay focused on how to create additional values in online services.
Byung Geun Park, vice-president and head of SK Telecom’s Data Business Division, said, "Mobile Cyworld’s great achievement has confirmed the
success of combined wired and wireless services. We will keep moving forward to provide a variety of differentiated combined wired and wireless services, in addition to Mobile Cyworld".
The goal for Mobile Cyworld that SK Telecom has set for the end of 2005, is to acquire a total of 1.5million users with 800,000 of these being monthly users. It is also planned for Mobile Cyworld to provide more sophisticated services such as allowing users to place their real-time streaming videos produced through mobile phones in their mini-homepages, during the second half of this year.
To celebrate Mobile Cyworld users hitting the one million mark, SK Telecom will hold a promotion event designed to offer the 1,000,000th user KRW 3 million in cash, and 5 thousand ’Dotori’(worth about KRW 500,000), and the 999,999th and 1,000,001st users, KRW 1 million in cash, and 1 thousand ’Dotori’ (worth about KRW 100,000) respectively.
From August 10th to September 10th new users of the Mobile Cyworld service will receive a variety of free benefits. These include one-month of free information service, 2 online Cyworld mini-homepage skins for one week, and free call charge benefits in the case of downloading Mobile Cyworld VM.
To add to the above, SK Telecom will provide a total of 2,200 Mobile Cyworld users free gifts, by drawing lots for the month of August. These gifts include large LCD TV, PMP, PSP, and SK Gift coupons.
