On August 8th, SK Telecom announced that the company signed an MOU with Nexon for cooperation in the mobile game business area.
According to the MOU, SK Telecom agreed to continue to introduce Nexon’s popular online games by converting them to mobile version, and then carrying out joint marketing activities with Nexon. SK Telecom launched Nexon’s ’Mabinogi’ game through GXG (www.GXG.com), a mobile game portal last April.
Through this strategic affiliation, both companies plan to conduct joint marketing activities for successfully commercializing ’Cart Rider Member Shop’, a wired and wireless combined game service that transformed a ’Cart Rider’ online game to a mobile version. In addition, they will present a similar service about ’Mabinogi’, and ’Mayple Story’, sometime in the second half of this year.
An SK Telecom official revealed that securing high-quality game content through Nexon will lead existing online gamers to mobile games offered by the wired and wireless combined game service. The two companies agreed to open a separate menu section that lets customers download SK Telecom’s mobile games within the Web-to-Phone format from NEXON.com, a Nexon’s game portal site.
In addition to the affiliation with Nexon, SK Telecom plans to extend its strategic alliances with domestic game developers that can create synergy effects with GXG. Furthermore, the company is pursuing to establish affiliations with overseas game operators including Japan.
Seung Yoon Ahn, head of SK Telcom’s Content Business Division, commented ’The strategic alliance with Nexon, the Korea’s number one online game operator, will give us an opportunity to bolster the competitive-edge of our GXG game portal. By constantly implementing affiliations with a number of game operators both at home and abroad, SK Telecom plans to activate the mobile game market.’
