SK Telecom plans to launch its Automatic Roaming Service in 29 cities in Vietnam, including Hochimin, Hanoi, and Harongbei.
This Automatic roaming service is available in all CDMA cellular system-adapted countries in Southeast Asia. These include Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.
On August 22, SK Telecom announced the launch of its Automatic Roaming Service in 29 cities in Vietnam. These include Hochimin, Hanoi, and Harongbei. SK Telecom subscribers traveling to these areas can now send and receive cellular calls with the same number and handset they used in Korea.
After beginning the service in South Pacific regions such as Australia and New Zealand, SK Telecom has continued to expand its automatic roaming service to North America and East Asia. By launching the service in Vietnam, the Automatic Roaming Service is available in all CDMA cellular system-adapted countries in Southeast Asia, including Thailand and Indonesia.
As of the first half of 2005, the number of Automatic Roaming Service users in Southeast Asia reached about 76,000. This represents a 106.5% increase over the same period in 2004. The number is expected to increase further, thanks to the launching of the service in Vietnam.
In addition, SK Telecom plans to stretch its service area to India and Macao later this year. As a result, its CDMA Automatic Roaming Service will extend through most of Asia.
Service rates ranging from approximately KRW 346 to KRW 494 per minute (discounts on Sunday and Holidays) will be charged when receiving or making local calls in Vietnam. When making international calls to Korea, the services range from about KRW 1,041 to KRW 1,363 per minute (discounts on Sunday and Holidays) will be charged. When receiving calls from Korea, about KRW 900 per minute (based on the 1US$=1013 exchange rate) will be charged. Receiving SMSs as well as enjoying the ’Call Keeper Service’ and the Caller ID service, are free of charge.
To use this service, the cellular handsets that are used in Korea require a menu setting that allows the handset to receive the local mobile phone service providers’ frequency. Once the customers get a roaming service guide from SK Telecom’s International Roaming Center located at the 3rd floor Departure Gate and Duty Free Area (next to Gate No 28) at the Incheon International Airport, they can simply make necessary changes, and operate the cellular handset menu on their own.
