This coming September SK Telecom will hold ’OMA TestFest #10’ which will become the stage for testing new standards from the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), an international mobile standardization group.
In the OMA Group, a number of the world’s major mobile phone makers e.g. Nokia, Ericsson, and Motorola, and mobile phone service providers such as NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone, will carry out a variety of wireless Internet service standardization activities. Currently SK Telecom, Samsung Electronics, and LG Electronics, are participating in the Group as Korean telecom operators.
’OMA TestFest’ was first launched in France, in November of 2002. This event takes place four or five times a year with the objective of verifying completion of the interoperability of varied wireless Internet standards established by the OMA, and confirming TestFest member companies’ product interconnectivity and compliance with OMA standards. The ’OMA TestFest’ that will be held by SK Telecom, is the 10th official event.
SK Telecom is participating in the OMA as a member of the Board of Directors. The company will host this event for the first time as a CDMA operator, and the second time (following China Mobile) as an Asian company hosting this event. SK Telecom plans to provide a GSM system test environment backed by the Korea IT Industry Promotion Agency (KIPA). In doing this, SK Telecom will become the world’s first TestFest hosting company that showcases test-bed networks of entire mobile communications systems. This will include such mobile systems as CDMA, WCDMA, GSM, etc.
Ju Sik Lee, senior vice-president and head of SK Telecom’s Terminal Research Center, commented, ’Hosting this TestFest event will establish a solid foundation for elevating SK Telecom’s status in the global wireless Internet service industry. Through this event, the handset makers and solution developers both at home and abroad, will have excellent opportunities for testing the interoperability of their products, as well as verifying their product’s compliance with international standards’
At ’OMA TestFest #9’, that took place in Helsinki in April of last year under the sponsorship of TeliaSonera, a mobile service provider in Finland, a total of 111 teams in 56 mobile communications operators around the globe, tested a broad range of wireless Internet standards. These included the 1.2 version of multimedia messaging service (MMS v1.2), and the 2.0 version of the digital copyright management solution (DRM v2.0).
’OMA TestFest #10’ will take place in Seoul’s JW Marriott Hotel (CDMA/WCDMA areas), and the KIPA (GSM/GPRS areas), from September 12th to 16th of 2005. Detailed information on the event is offered through the official OMA homepage (www.openmobilealliance.org).
