Press Release
SK Telecom’s wireless Internet platform will be opened for service in Thailand. This will establish a solid foundation to expand its service area to the global market.
This move gave an opportunity to domestic small and medium-sized platform system producers to make inroads into overseas markets
SK Telecom announced that its wireless Internet platform will be opened for service in Thailand starting June 16. The platform was exported to the Thai GSM operator TA Orange last year.
As it started providing wireless Internet consulting services to TA Orange, in December 2003, SK Telecom signed a contract with TA Orange for supplying wireless Internet platforms worth about USD 6.3 million in July of 2004.
In accordance with the contract, SK Telecom will furnish wireless Internet platforms, which include WAP Gateway, Portal Platform, and WCDS (Wireless content Download & Delivery System), after a year-long development period. It is the first time for a CDMA based wireless Internet platform to be provided to a GSM operator.
Jong Tae Lim, vice-president and head of SK Telecom’s Platform Research Center, commented with respect to this advancement, "This has significance as it demonstrates that SK Telecom has successfully entered the GSM market and expanded its platform market worldwide. SK Telecom was able to secure GSM markets abroad with its operational know-how that was acquired by continuously exporting wireless Internet platforms to worldwide CDMA operators since 2002. On top of this, this SK Telecom’s move gave an opportunity to domestic small and medium-sized platform system producers to make inroads into overseas markets."
In addition, SK Telecom signed another contract with TA Orange to supply color mail solutions in January of this year. SK Telecom plans to continue exporting wireless Internet platforms to mobile operators in Asia and Europe.
There are currently a total of four mobile operators in Thailand. TA Orange is the third-largest wireless operator in the country with about 3.5 million subscribers. The company has been growing rapidly through differentiated wireless Internet services and aggressive marketing; its subscriber base grew by about 175% in 2004.
