SK Telecom announced the launch of ’WCDMA Automatic Roaming’ service in Korea as well as Japan in a joint effort with Japan’s Vodafone K.K. starting on June 7th.
The WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) service is a 3rd generation mobile communications service that offers video telephony as well as high-quality data and multitasking functions. Currently SK Telecom is providing the commercial services in Seoul, and plans to extend its services to metropolitan area and major cities by this year-end, and 84 cities nationwide by the second half of 2006. Vodafone K.K. has been providing the commercial WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) service throughout Japan since December of 2002.
Just like existing CDMA Automatic Roaming service, the WCDMA Automatic Roaming service lets SK Telecom customers to enjoy cellular service in foreign countries while using the same number and WCDMA handset (Samsung W120) they used in Korea. In particular, this service features to make voice calls as well as video telephony calls.
The WCDMA Automatic Roaming service fee in Japan is as follows: * Voice Calls: KRW 607 (1 yen = 9.26 won) per minute for local calls, KRW 1,045 (non-peak time) and KRW 1,891 (peak time) per minute for making calls to Korea, KRW 324 per minute for receiving calls from Korea * Video Telephony Calls: same rate as voice calls in case of making calls to Korea, KRW 1,860 per minute for receiving calls from Korea. Making the video telephony calls through different handset models in Japan is not allowed for the time being. ?The video telephony call charge in Korea is KRW 80 per 10 seconds during non-peak time and holidays, and KRW 120 per 10 seconds during peak time.
When SK Telecom customers make voice or video telephony calls in the roaming areas of Japan, they press area code and phone number for local calls. When making calls between SK Telecom subscribers in the country, they simply press the numbers in the same way they do when making calls in Korea. In case of making international calls from Korea to Japan’s Vodafone subscribers, they press the international call carrier’s number, country code, area code, and phone number. Currently SK Telink (prefix number:00700), a subsidiary company of SK Telecom, is only international call carrier for roaming service in Korea. SK Telecom plans to extend the role of international call carrier to other mobile phone service providers in Korea.
As the international automatic roaming service offers video telephony calls, other than voice calls as well as wireless Internet, it will provide the same service functions as domestic mobile phone service in a gradual manner.
Within this year SK Telecom plans to launch the commercial WCDMA Automatic Roaming service in such countries as Hong Kong, Singapore, Italy, Netherlands, England, and Germany, where there are number of Korean visitors.
Furthermore, the company will be further allied with WCDMA service providers around the world. This, together with the CDMA Automatic Roaming service and Rental Roaming service, will lay a solid foundation to build a single global network. Currently the SK Telecom?s CDMA Automatic Roaming service is offered to 15 countries that include the U.S., China, Thailand, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. The Rental Roaming service is provided to about 160 countries around the globe.
In order to use this service in overseas countries, the cellular handsets that are used in Korea require a menu setting that allows the handset to receive the local mobile phone service providers’ frequency. Customers can simply make necessary changes to the cellular handset menu on their own with the guide from two SK Telecom International Roaming Centers located in the airport duty free zone. One is in front of gate 28, and the other is on the 3rd floor departure gate at Incheon International Airport.
Jin Seok Cha, vice-president and head of SK Telecom’s CRM Division, commented "The WCDMA Automatic Roaming service will be a more beneficial service to SK Telecom subscribers, and play an important role in building a global network."
The number of SK Telecom’s global roaming service users reached 560 thousand in 2003, 1.12 million in 2004. The users are increasing to reach over 1.7 million in 2005. About 520 thousand WCDMA roaming service users are expected by 2007.
