SK Telecom Signs an MOU with Korea Ginseng Corp. and Shinsegae I&C for RFID Pilot Project
2005.05.26 PrintSK Telecom, Korea Ginseng Corp. and Shinsegae I&C signed an MOU designed to jointly implement the ’RFID Pilot Project’
This pilot project, led by the private sector, will be conducted to introduce RFID in distribution and logistics areas early on.
services regarding product authenticity and distribution, as well as tracking of Ginseng, will be offered both at home and overseas
On May 26th, SK Telecom, Korea Ginseng Corp. and Shinsegae I&C signed an MOU to jointly implement a genuine ginseng management service pilot project for Korea Ginseng Corporation’s "Jung Kwan Jang" product, which is distributed both domestically and internationally. This will involve the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.
RFID is a technology that detects and transmits product information via radio frequency by a small chip called a "Tag" attached to a variety of products. The tag contains product information. Through this RFID pilot project, the basic specifications and distribution information of Korea Ginseng Corporation’s products will be stored in the RFID tag. This will allow consumers to identify the products’ distribution processes, as well as product authenticity, by using mobile RFID terminals.
SK Telecom, as the chair company of Korea RFID/USN Association, manages RFID’s mobile infrastructure arenas such as the development of mobile RFID platforms and terminals. In the future, the company plans to offer product authenticity management services in foreign countries through the international mobile phone roaming service.
Since February of 2005, SK Telecom and Shinsegae I&C have jointly implemented the development of RFID infrastructure by forming a strategic alliance. Through the pilot project, Shinsegae I&C will also verify the RFID automatic detection system and location tracking solution developed jointly with ETRI, and plans to introduce RFID tag-attached products in Shinsegae Group’s sales outlets in stages.
Korea Ginseng Corp. will increase its brand value by protecting customers from low priced imitation ginseng products made in China. It also plans to improve productivity by applying RFID solutions.
Myung Sung Lee, executive vice-president and head of SK Telecom’s Strategic Technology Group commented, "Through this RFID pilot project, SK Telecom plans to seek out and implement a vast array of new RFID-based business models by combining the current mobile phone services with RFID."
This RFID pilot project is based, and 100% managed, by private capital. This is unlike existing RFID pilot projects led by the government. This project is different than the traditional projects because it is close to a substantial marketable phase. Furthermore, it allows consumers to be able to purchase real RFID tag-attached products at sales outlets during the pilot project period. By the second half of this year, the products will be put on sale at some sales outlets of the Korea Ginseng Corp., and at Shinsegae Department Stores, both at home and abroad.
