Offers ’Overseas Emergency Special Report Service’, starting May 16th
Launches Data Automatic roaming service in Guam and Saipan Island, followed by Launches in Thailand, Japan, and China
Overseas security services will be available to the 1.7 million SK Telecom subscribers who use international roaming services each year. This includes emergency medical services, as well as overseas emergency situation guide services.
SK Telecom announced on May 16th that the company will provide ’24 Hour Emergency Medical Service’ to SK Telecom roaming service subscribers in a joint effort with International SOS (www.internationalsos.com), the world’s largest medical support service provider that is based in England. This service lets subscribers gain medical support anytime, around the globe.
In addition, SK Telecom offers subscribers an ’Overseas Emergency Special Report Service’ to its roaming service subscribers free of charge. This is done in a joint effort with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, starting on May 16th. This service reports disaster situations and their countermeasures on a real-time basis through text messages on a cellular phone, whenever such emergency situations as natural disasters or war occur in a country where they are visiting.
Through these overseas security services, SK Telecom plans to offer a wide variety of information to its international roaming service users. This allows a proper and timely response to any possible emergency situation, while taking overseas tours or business trips.
Previously the roaming service used to offer voice calls only. The service has now been extended to the wireless Internet, as well as varied subscriber convenience services such as overseas medical and disaster reports. In conjunction with this, the roaming service quality will be brought up to a level similar to that of the domestic mobile phone service quality, in the near future.
The ’24 Hour Emergency Medical Service’ provides: Mobile phone medical consultation with Korean doctors around the clock, in a case of having a sudden health problem while on an overseas trip, Medical support such as a medical transfer service during an emergency medical situation, Interpretation when needed during an emergency medical situation.
To use this service, customers have to access the 24 hour Alarm Center (82-2-3140-1771) of the International SOS, via an SK Telecom roaming phone. The center operation and customer consultation costs are at SK Telecom’s expense. However, medical treatment, transfer and call charges will be at the customers’ expense. The roaming call charge is KRW 1,000 per minute which is more economical than international hotel call charges which average KRW 5,000 per minute, and public pay phones where an international call averages KRW 2,000 per minute.
In the Overseas Emergency Special Report service, which is offered in a joint effort with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SK Telecom provides an international roaming network free of charge, and the Ministry takes emergency messages that will be delivered to SK Telecom roaming service users via the message transmission system of the Ministry’s Call Center that operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The number of roaming service users reached 560 thousand in 2003 and 1.12 million in 2004. It is expected to exceed 1.7 million in 2005. In this regard, the overseas emergency situation guide service will contribute a great deal to the security of roaming service users while abroad.

Our overseas security roaming service will make a deep impression on our customers by supporting their safety in foreign countries in addition to offering the existing basic call functions".
