It has been one year since "UNISK", a joint venture company between SK Telecom and China Unicom, launched a commercial wireless Internet service in China.
"UNISK" was launched on February 6, 2004 in Beijing, and has been offering commercial wireless Internet service under the brand name of ’U Jok-Bu-Rak’ since March 1, 2004. The company is China’s first joint venture telecom service provider that operates with both foreign and national companies. UNISK was capitalized at 6 million US dollars. SK Telecom owns a 49% share of the joint venture company’s equity, and China Unicom owns a 51% share.
"UNISK" has secured about 200 thousand wireless Internet subscribers within such a short period of one year of its commercial service launch. The company also has gained 17% share in the China’s Virtual Machine (VM) market. This has helped UNISK to lay the robust base for entering into top range in the China’s wireless Internet service market.
An SK Telecom official revealed that "UNISK" has been providing more cutting-edge wireless Internet services comparing with local competitors in China as the company realized the interoperability between WAP, SMS, and IVR (Interactive Voice Response) based on the operational know-how accumulated in the Korean market. Furthermore, the company introduced a more advanced marketing activities than those of local companies. This includes such thing as brand marketing that put the brand name on wireless Internet service. This is a first in the China’s wireless Internet service arena. These are the main factors to explain the UNISK’s great achievement in the Chinese market.
UNISK, in cooperation with 12 Korean content providers, has introduced about 40 different items of digital content since the initial stage of the wireless Internet service launch in China. This is the first time that Korean small and medium-sized content providers have been able to advance into overseas markets in partnership with a large-sized Korean telecom entity which is furnishing a local base for business operations.
Through this mechanism the content providers can make inroads into overseas markets without facing some of the prior difficulties and obstacles. Because SK Telecom has released the world’s best level of wireless Internet service into the Chinese telecom market through UNISK, the Korean content providers will be able to take advantage of SK Telecom’s base to export their products to China without delay.
Sue Hyuk Lee, president of UNISK, commented "In 2005, we plan to become a leading wireless Internet service provider in China’s telecom market by constantly increasing our market share, and achieving the sales revenue of USD 2.5 million that is a break-even-point. At the same time, UNISK will secure about 500 thousand subscribers as the company enters into new service areas such as cellular ring back tone service and photo portal service".
China, as the world’s largest mobile communications market with over 300 million mobile phone users, has huge growth potential in the wireless Internet area. This gives Korean business entities great opportunities to export their advanced wireless Internet technologies to China.
