Press Release
President Kim was the only CEO from Korea to speak at the 3GSM World Congress.
the launch of converged services, Establishment of optimized networks, and provision of multiple function terminals are needed to accelerate the progress of the convergence era.
the Korean WIPI platform will be developed for GSM regions by the second quarter of This year. This will facilitate Korean wireless Internet technology exports to GSM regions, including Europe.
President Kim also introduced SK Telecom’s five converged businesses that include satellite DMB, MONETA, and Melon.
"You can succeed in the convergence era when you are equipped with the following three factors: Telecom converged services that satisfy customers’ needs, optimized networks that support the converged services, and multiple function terminals".
Shin Bae Kim, president of SK Telecom, gave a keynote speech with the theme ’SK Telecom’s strategy towards Convergence’ at the 3GSM World Congress 2005 on February 17th in Cannes, France.
In the speech, president Kim first stated, "As head of a company that has experienced a broad range of mobile communications services and technologies I am honored to introduce SK Telecom’s examples of convergence." He also stressed that the convergence trend will be further accelerated, and customers will require more personalized services and more convenient devices. In reflecting these customers’ demands, mobile phone service providers could develop new growth engines to overcome the current stagnant growth in the market.
An SK Telecom official revealed that president Kim is the only CEO from Korea out of 30 keynote speakers at the event. This demonstrates the worldwide interest in Korea’s third generation mobile communications business that is actively implementing the international spread of WCDMA services.
President Kim commented on three factors that are required to succeed in the convergence era in his speech. The first factor is the offering of converged services by utilizing the digital convergence that is spreading to each industry. That is to say, the converged service of telecommunications and broadcasting is not a simple combined service. It is actually a completely new type of service that is an interactive service. The second factor is that in order to effectively support converged services, mobile service providers must establish an optimized network portfolio that combines a variety of networks that are suitable for each service feature.
The third factor is the fact that the converged services must be supported by multiple function terminals. The future terminals will evolve to be highly functional, with a built-in MP3 and camera. At the same time, information detection functions will be improved by installing a variety of sensors in the terminal. These terminals will fit in the ubiquitous environment based on multi-mode and multi-band services.
In addition, president Kim spoke of WIPI, Korea’s wireless Internet standard platform in detail, and revealed that the WIPI platform will be developed for GSM regions by the second quarter of this year. This will enable GSM mobile phone users to enjoy wireless Internet service in Europe. He also said, "The WIPI is interoperable with the JAVA platform used in GSM regions. This means that JAVA platform-based wireless content and solutions are compatible with the WIPI system. This will facilitate Korean wireless Internet technology exports to GSM regions, including Europe. Recognizing the convergence area as a new growth opportunity, SK Telecom is striving to find new business models". He also revealed SK Telecom’s five converged business models. These include ’Satellite DMB’(converged business of telecommunications and broadcasting), "MONETA"(converged business of telecommunications and finance), "Melon"(converged business of telecommunications and entertainment), "NATE Drive" (Telematics service), and ’1mm’ (personalized service). In particular, he stressed the different advanced features of "Melon" wired and wireless integrated music service over those of I-tunes. In the case of I-tunes service, if users pay 99 cents per song they can reproduce that song without limits. However, the Melon service lets users enjoy as many songs as they want during the subscription period monthly flat rate. This service applies as a rental type service model. Furthermore, while users need an exclusive player to enjoy I-tunes service, the Melon service can be offered through a variety of devices such as cellular phones, PCs, and MP3.
President Kim also said, " Convergence will provide a great opportunity for global mobile communications operators to continue to grow. To succeed in the converged market we must keep studying what our customer demand, and what kind of services and values we will offer to them. That is how the convergence business starts to be fully realized". In his closing comments he said, "SK Telecom has recognized the importance of overseas markets for the last couple of years. We are now implementing multifaceted strategic alliances with global telecom operators in order to establish an optimized environment for new services".
After finishing his keynote speech, he commented, "There are indications that a WCDMA third generation mobile phone service will soon be activated in Europe. The WCDMA service will also be expanding further in the Korean market starting in 2005".
The 3GSM World Congress is one of the world’s largest wireless communications events in which worldwide GSM operators and equipment makers participate.
