This will hasten the development of the domestic IT industry by furnishing opportunities to export IT equipment and solutions to overseas markets
SK Telecom and Alcatel of France signed a contract for building an infrastructure designed to support the advance of domestic IT companies into GSM markets. This will contribute greatly to the boosting of the IT industry in Korea.
An SK Telecom official revealed that on December 7th in Alcatel’s head office, Jung Nam Cho, vice-chairman of SK Telecom, and Philip Jeomong, president of Alcatel, signed a contract for the building of a 3G Reality Center(RC) in Seoul. Daeje Chin, Korean Minister of Information and Communication, also participated in the contract signing ceremony.
The 3G RC in Seoul is expected to be established in SK Telecom’s Network Research Center based in Boondang, during this year. It is designed to offer GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS test environments, and give domestic IT companies an opportunity to develop GSM-related technologies. It will also test interoperability technologies between CDMA and GSM cellular systems. In addition, the center will provide a chance to convert SK Telecom’s and other domestic IT companies’ competitive wireless platforms and solutions into GSM system platforms and solutions. SK Telecom plans to export these system platforms packaged with Alcatel equipment, to overseas markets.
SK Telecom and domestic IT companies can now test and convert their CDMA solution platforms and equipment-related tools and services into GSM systems, through Alcatel’s GSM network. Accordingly, they will have more opportunity to develop GSM-related technologies, and secure overseas marketing channels through Alcatel, a world-class telecom company.
Previously, to make inroads into GSM markets, domestic small and medium-sized IT companies had to pay high costs and spend much time visiting GSM equipment manufacturers overseas, in order to conduct interoperability testing of CDMA and GSM cellular systems. Now they can do the testing through SK Telecom, in a rapid and convenient manner. This will allow them to save time as well as costs, in facilitating the development of equipment and solutions that fit the GSM environment.
In addition, working with a global company like Alcatel will allow domestic IT companies to increase their service creditability for exporting equipment and solutions to overseas markets. This will greatly contribute to the development of the domestic IT industry.
Alcatel is a global GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS equipment manufacturer. To secure competitiveness in the global mobile communications industry, it has established 3G Reality Centers in fourteen countries around the world, and has been conducting joint marketing and 3G service development, through global partnerships.
