The commercial WiBro service will be launched in Seoul by June of 2006, and in 84 major cities across the country by 2009.
The WiBro network construction plan optimized for Korea’s frequency environment is completed.
Differentiated services like Wibro portal, optimized content, and a combined service package, will be available
On November 30th, SK Telecom announced that the company will submit the WiBro business plan to the Ministry of Information and Communication on December 12th, 2004. The WiBro is a portable Internet service in the range of 2.3Ghz frequency bandwidth.
SK Telecom mapped out a plan to build an optimized network that enables the provision of high-speed and high-capacity data service. This will satisfy the government’s technological requirements for the WiBro service.
Min Rae Cho, executive vice-president and head of SK Telecom’s Next Generation Wireless Internet Business Group commented, "Based on network design and operational know-how accumulated over the last 20 years, we will build the best network structure with a wireless network cell-plan tool optimized for Korea’s frequency environment, and a WiBro capacity cell-plan tool developed by SK Telecom. The plan for securing a transmission network, and reallocation of base-stations in substantial service areas (84 cities nationwide) has been completed".
SK Telecom’s plan reveals that the commercial WiBro service will be launched in Seoul by June of 2006. After that, the service area will be extended every year to high-service demand zones. The service is scheduled to be launched in 84 major cities across the country by 2009.
The plan also contains the maximization of customer value through offering distinctive services. These include
- ’Biz’ service such as B2B and M2M solutions, and information services like messaging, streaming video, music, games, as well as a location-based service through the WiBro portal
- A content service optimized for the WiBro portal by utilizing SK Telecom’s content pool (about 680 thousand content categories)
- A combined service package with cellular phone (1x EV-DO, WCDMA), satellite DMB, and high-speed Internet.
For the WiBro service, SK Telecom will introduce a variety of rate plans based on a partial flat rate plan that adopts the strong points from both the flat rate plan, and a traffic volume-based rate plan. This will let customers choose the most suitable rate plan for them, in accordance with their service use practices.
SK Telecom forecasts that the number of subscribers will reach 9.5 million by 2011. This would be five years from the first launch of the service.
An SK Telecom official revealed that in order to secure commercial technology and stable procurement of equipment for the construction of the WiBro network, the company formed strategic alliances with a number of telecom companies such as Samsung Electronics, which have core technologies. In addition, SK Telecom plans to offer R&D infrastructures such as the company’s test-bed, to help small-and medium sized venture companies to develop WiBro technologies and equipment at an early stage.
Based on its prior experience in mapping out the IMT-2000 business plan, SK Telecom made the utmost in efforts to prepare a feasible business plan. Therefore, the company is confident that the WiBro business plan will receive an affirmative result in the government’s business plan screening.
