Initiation of the ’Coloring’ service business in the U.S. has great significance because it demonstrates that the excellence of Korea’s mobile communications technology is now being fully recognized
SK Telecom’s global business, from the export of equipment to long-term operation, will be extended.
The launching of the ’Coloring’ service business in the U.S. will lay the groundwork for making inroads into other overseas advanced markets.
SK Telecom offers a Call Connection Sound Service called ’Coloring’ to Verizon Wireless customers starting on November 16th. Verizon Wireless is the largest mobile phone service provider in the U.S.
To this end, SKTI, SK Telecom’s branch office in the U.S., plans to invest about two million US dollars in building facilities for the Coloring service over the next three years. SKTI will take charge of the service as an application service provider (ASP).
Through the Coloring application service provision business, SK Telecom will receive a specific part of the Coloring service revenue from Verizon Wireless for three years. This will cover the Coloring subscriber and content managing costs. The Coloring service will be introduced to Verizon Wireless customers in the western region (San Diego in California) first. The service will then be extended to every area of the U.S. by the end of the first half of 2005.
SK Telecom first started exporting 1.7 million worth of the Coloring system to S-Telecom of Vietnam in April 2003. Since then, the company has been constantly exploring overseas markets for its Coloring Service solution and system, while focusing on the Southeast Asian markets such as Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia. As a result, the total exported amount of the solution surpassed 10 million dollars by July 2004.
SK Telecom’s Coloring service business has great significance because it demonstrates that the U.S. has now fully recognized the excellence of Korea’s mobile communications technology. This will be a good opportunity to showcase the competitive-edge of Korea’s mobile communications technology in the advanced overseas market.
SK Telecom disclosed its commitment to strengthen its global operations at the 20th anniversary of its foundation. Previously the company’s global business was primarily concentrated on exporting mobile communications equipment. Now the company is placing the utmost emphasis on the aspects of the global business that creates profits on a long-term basis. The Coloring service business in the U.S. will be a starting point toward meeting the company’s global business strategy.
Jin Woo Seo, head of SK Telecom’s New Business Group commented, "The Coloring service business for Verizon Wireless customers has a great significance because the number one mobile communications operator in the U.S. has recognized the excellence of SK Telecom’s advanced mobile communications technology. This has laid the groundwork for making inroads into other advanced overseas markets with the Coloring service solution".
Currently Verizon Wireless of the U.S. has 40 million mobile phone subscribers. On March 22nd, 2004 SK Telecom and Verizon Wireless signed a contract for a strategic alliance in the following fields: Research on Smart Phone and optimization of CDMA 1x EV-DO / Data Roaming service / International standardization of platforms and applications / Video-On-Demand (VOD), Coloring service, and Video Telephony.
