SK Telecom plans to launch a series of new handsets with new designs and increased functionality designed to provide differentiated services that will maintain market leadership in the interactive mobile number portability market environment.
An SK Telecom official revealed that the design and function of handsets have recently become a major factor in deciding the type of cellular service chosen by customers. In order to fully respond to this trend, and be prepared for the resumption of sales activity that is scheduled to begin on September 29th, SK Telecom plans to introduce a wide spectrum of new handsets.
The Samsung Electronics’ SCH-V500 model that was launched exclusively for SK Telecom cellular services, has been selling at a rate of more than 1,500 units a day. Thanks to this popularity, SK Telecom plans to introduce the follow-up model ’SCH-V600’, in the near future. The company will also continue to launch horizontal screen type handsets with a view to preparing for an increasing demand for streaming video in cellular handsets that support a wide range of multimedia functions.
In addition, Pantech & Curitel’s new handset models ’P1’ and ’PH-S3500’ are scheduled to be launched in September or October. Terminals enabled for satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) service will also be introduced as horizontal screen types, in order to maximize their TV broadcasting functions. The satellite DMB service has been actively evolving as one of SK Telecom’s strategic core businesses.
SK Telecom has also been concentrating on an inside antenna slide type handset model that sports a neat and tidy design achieved by placing the antenna inside the handset body. In line with this, Samsung Electronics’ SCH-S140 and SK Teletech’s IM-7400 models will be introduced to the market in the near future.
At the same time, the company has remodeled a bar type handset with the revival of a design that used be popular seven or eight years ago. This LG Electronics’ LG-SD860 handset model was launched in August of this year. It features a simplicity of usage that lets users make or terminate calls with a single button without having to open or close the folder. This model has European styling and carries an antenna inside the handset body.
According to a survey conducted by SK Telecom, the customer preference ratio that involves function and design of handsets, drastically increased from 19% in 2002, and 22.1% in 2003, to 29.2% in 2004. This demonstrates the importance of handset design when people select a mobile phone service. As a result of these findings, the company has decided to launch a new line-up of design and functionality focused handsets during the second half of this year.
Hyung Keun Kim, head of SK Telecom’s Mobile Device Division commented, "Handset design becomes a very important factor in the purchasing of a handset. Moreover, customers prefer a variety of advanced functions like MP3, cameras, games, and financial transactions, in addition to the voice call function. SK Telecom will continue to fill its customers’ ever-changing needs through introducing a series of new handsets equipped with stylish designs and cutting-edge functions".
