The ’2004 SK Telecom Cup National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament’ hosted by SK Telecom, and sponsored by the Korea Wheelchair Basketball Federation, will take place in the Jamsil Student Gymnasium for four days, starting on September 2nd.
This tournament is designed to promote wheelchair basketball games, and promote a warm and happy society by giving educational support to physically challenged people. The tournament was first launched using the name ’Chairman Cup National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament’ in 1997. Its name was changed to the ’SK Telecom Cup National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament’ in 2002(the 6th tournament), and the 8th tournament is being played this year.
A total of 17 teams nationwide, will compete in the tournament. There are 13 teams of physically challenged people, and 4 teams of non-physically challenged people. The most likely winner of the championship is the ’Longevity National Wheelchair Basketball Team’ that has won the tournament four years in a row, including the 2003 SK Telecom Cup National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament’. This team’s members are composed of a number of current national basketball team players.
Another top choice for the championship, who could possibly keep the Longevity National Wheelchair Basketball Team from gaining a fifth year of consecutive victories, are ’Holt’ and ’Ansan Wheel Plus’. The capability of these two teams has greatly improved through systematic training. In addition, the Special Physical Education Teams from Yong In University and Korea National Sport University, are expected to show outstanding capabilities in the tournament.
The 4 non-physically challenged teams consist of wheelchair basketball players from the Special Physical Education Teams of Yong In University, Korea National Sport University, and Hanshin University. They will share valuable experiences with physically challenged people in the venue of the basketball tournament.
In the tournament SK Telecom will offer a variety of special events for viewers. These include an autograph session by the SK KNights professional basketball team players, and the donation of SKY handsets and autographed balls won by the drawing of lots, and the playing of simple recreational games.
Shin Bae Kim, president of SK Telecom commented, "We are pleased that this tournament provides an opportunity to demonstrate that physical disabilities will never affect physical capabilities. All the players will do their best to fully display the abilities they have cultivated for a long time".
