Press Release
In May of 2003, the service was launched in the central region (Bangkok and Pataya) of Thailand.
Recently SK Telecom added 51 cities in Thailand to the service area. These include Chiangmai and Puket that are the most famous resort areas in Thailand.
A total of one million customers are expected to be using the service before the end of this year.
SK Telecom’s Automatic Roaming service area was expanded to all of Thailand. Previously the service area was limited to the central region (Bangkok, Pataya, and Cosamet).
On September 1st, an SK Telecom official announced that the Automatic Roaming service area was expanded to both the southern and northern parts of Thailand. The Automatic Roaming service allows SK Telecom customers to enjoy cellular service in foreign countries while using the same number and handset they used in Korea.
Now, SK Telecom customers can use the Automatic Roaming service in 37 cities in the northern part (including Chiangmai and Chianglai), and 14 cities (including Puket, Crabi) in the southern part of Thailand.
The usage rate for the Automatic Roaming Service is 434 Korean won per minute for calls inside Thailand, and 1,519 won per minute when making international calls to Korea.
In addition, a 1,193 won per minute international call rate will be charged for receiving calls from Korea.
In order to use this service in overseas countries, the cellular handsets that are used in Korea require a menu setting that allows the handset to receive the local mobile phone service providers’ frequency. Customers can simply make necessary changes to the cellular handset menu on their own with the guide from two SK Telecom International Roaming Centers located in the airport duty free zone. One is in front of gate 28, and the other is on the 3rd floor departure gate at Incheon International Airport.
After beginning the service in Australia in September of 2000, the company has continued to expand the CDMA Automatic Roaming service into the U.S., Japan, China, Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong and many other countries. The company is currently providing the service in 14 countries around the globe. As the number of service users increases steadily, a total of one million customers are expected to be using this service by the end of this year.
Responding to the rapid growth in the number of Automatic Roaming service users, SK Telecom will place the utmost emphasis on further expanding international roaming areas, and enhancing customer service.
