Adoption of SK Telecom’s technology as the international standard at the IEEE 802.16 conference, is a first in the world for a telecommunications operator
SK Telecom has applied for twenty patents on the portable Internet-related technology.
On May 21st, SK Telecom announced that the company proposed five Portable Internet-related core technologies at the IEEE 802.16 conference that took place in Simcheon, China from May 17th to 20th. Out of these five technologies, the core technology for the improvement of Portable Internet data transmission was adopted as the international standard at the conference.
An SK Telecom official revealed that adopting SK Telecom’s technology as the international standard at the IEEE 802.16 conference was a world’s first for a telecommunications operator. This proved that our domestic wireless communications technology is at a world’s best level.
In addition to the adopted technology, the company presented four platform technologies concerning hand-off and authentication, which drew keen attention from national and international telecom manufacturers. These four technologies were not adopted at the conference this time, but an Ad-Hoc group of the IEEE 802.16 conference will discuss them again. At that time, there is a high probability they will adopt those four platform technologies as international standards.
Sung Ho Ha, vice-president and head of SK Telecom’s Next Generation Wireless Internet Business Group said, "Adopting SK Telecom’s technology as the international standard at the IEEE 802.16 conference has a great significance in terms of reflecting the technological perspective of telecom operators. Based on the world’s best level of mobile communications technology, and its operational know-how, SK Telecom will put forth its best efforts to solidify Korea’s position in the global portable Internet market arena.
The IEEE is the world’s largest technology expertise group. It consists of 330 thousand members in about 150 countries around the globe. Currently the portable Internet-related technology is under discussion in IEEE 802,16. The participants in this IEEE conference held in China are SK Telecom, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, ETRI, KT, Hanaro Telecom, and many other companies. The final standard for the portable Internet will be determined after two or three more conferences.
SK Telecom has applied for twenty patents on portable Internet-related technologies, and will strive to make these technologies leaders in the worldwide marketplace.
