Press Release
SK Telecom now has the second largest number of Telematics service subscribers in the world, second only to GM Onstar of the U.S. This was less than two years after the service launch.
The launch of new service products, affordable service rates, and terminals with convenient functions, played a pivotal role in forming an initial market.
The company plans to energize the domestic market at an early stage by constantly developing competitive solutions and nurturing content providers.
SK Telecom announced that by April 28th the number of NATE Drive service subscribers exceeded 100 thousand. This was less than two years after the service launch. The NATE Drive service is Korea’s first Telematics service that informs customers about real time traffic situations via their cellular phones.
SK Telecom now has the second largest number of Telematics service subscribers in the world, second only to GM Onstar of the U.S. This has a great significance because the future prospects for Telematics services was considered to be somewhat gloomy in the worldwide market.
Kyu Gwan Lim, vice-president and head of SK Telecom’s Business Solution Division commented, "The launch of new service products, affordable service rates, and terminals with convenient functions, played a pivotal role in forming an initial market. SK Telecom, as a leading Telematics service provider, will contribute to energizing the domestic market at an early stage by constantly developing competitive solutions and nurturing content providers".
Vice-president Lim also stated, "By the first part of this year, customers will be able to use the service at an affordable rate, via a Geographical Positioning System. SK Telecom plans to launch WIPI-based terminals that offer a map for route guidance to vehicle drivers. This will greatly contribute to the widespread use of the NATE Drive service".
Unlike existing navigation services, the SK Telecom NATE Drive service lets customers enjoy NATE wireless data service and Telematics services at the same time. This service provides drivers with vital information such as driving routing guidance and real-time traffic situations, while using voice and graphic messages through both a Global Positioning System, and a cellular phone wireless network. If you register your final destination, or your driving course, on NATE Drive homepage through your PCs, you can get real-time traffic information through a terminal installed in your car.
In addition to routing guidance and real-time traffic situations, it offers dangerous driving situation alerts, and Emergency Road Service that gets rapid help to customers when they find themselves in an emergency situation. This includes sending an ambulance or towing vehicle. It also furnishes a facility locating service that helps search for a variety of facilities used by drivers, and then shows them the fastest way to get there. This includes gas stations, restaurants, etc. Customers are also allowed to obtain a variety of useful content related to leisure pursuits. This includes recommendable weekend journeys, news, golf, etc.
The Emergency Road service has become hugely popular because it allows the SK Telecom Customer Center to quickly respond to any emergency situation that besets its customers. The Customer Center can immediately capture a customer’s current location data as soon as they press the GPS emergency button.
NATE Drive service rates consist of a Premium Rate plan (monthly fixed rate: 20,000 won) and Regular Rate plan (initial rate: 9,000 won). An additional fee will be charged when subscribers use additional services. There is also a Light Rate plan that is billed by the subscribers’ service use volume, without a fixed rate.
