Press Release
The ’Diversity Technology’ involved, can double the capacity of down-linking and up-linking without altering existing networks.
The two companies agreed to conduct joint technology development, and joint marketing activities, as well as making a joint investment.
Both companies plan to complete chipset development by June of 2004, and commercial handset development by the beginning of 2005.
SK Telecom has formed a strategic affiliation with Magnolia, a venture company which has developed excellent wireless communication technologies in the U.S.
On October 10th, Ju Sik Lee, vice-president of SK Telecom’s Network Research Center, and Haim Harel, president of Magnolia, oversaw the MOU Signing Ceremony in the SK Telecom Building in Boondang City. In the MOU, the two companies agreed to commercialize the ’Diversity Technology’ named DiversityPlus?, held by Magnolia. To increase wireless transmission capacity, they also agreed to conduct joint technology development and joint marketing activities.
’Diversity Technology’ can double the capacity for down-linking, (sending data to a cellular phone from a base station) and up-linking, (sending data to a base station from a cellular phone) on CDMA2000 1X and EV-DO networks, without altering the existing network. This procedure can be done through a chip inserted in a handset.
SK Telecom believes that securing the Diversity Technology will greatly contribute to the utilization of high-capacity multimedia services such as Video Call Service, and greatly increase the speed of existing data services. The company is also expected to secure related core technologies through the joint development of follow-on technologies to the Diversity Technology.
The SK Telecom official revealed that in order to commercialize the technology at an early stage, both companies will complete the development of handset chipsets during the first part of 2004, and commercial handset development by the beginning of 2005.
Ju Sik Lee, vice-president of SK Telecom’s Network Research Center said, "Through this strategic affiliation with Magnolia, SK Telecom is able to satisfy customers’ diverse demands for multimedia services more effectively. The company plans to obtain a wide range of wireless application technologies through forming strategic alliances with excellent national and international venture companies.
Magnolia is a venture company established in the U.S. in the year 2001 with an initial capitalization of 9 million US dollars. It is currently involved in RFIC (Radio Frequency Integrated Chip) designing, and terminal uplink and downlink diversity technologies.
