SK Telecom announced its full-fledged entry into the vehicle integration type Telematics market by launching a `Vehicle Integration Type NATE Drive Service` for the customer who purchases any model SM5 series by Renault Samsung Motors. An SK Telecom customer is shown obtaining traffic information by using the intelligent information navigation system (INS300) installed in an SM5 vehicle.
On the 1st of September, SK Telecom announced its full-fledged entry into the vehicle integration type Telematics market by launching a ’Vehicle Integration Type NATE Drive Service’ for the customer who purchases any model SM5 series by Renault Samsung Motors (www.renaultsamsungm.com).
This service has been successfully commercialized in the short time since SK Telecom, Renault Samsung Motors, and Samsung Electronics, signed an MOU for the development of the service in April of 2002. To perform the service, an ’intelligent information navigation system’ (INS300) will be installed in the vehicle as an option, when the vehicle is built. Previously, the customer had to arrange to have a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver installed in the vehicle to be able to use the Telematics service.
The ’Vehicle Integration Type NATE Drive Service’ allows customers to enjoy colorful map-based route guides, traffic and daily information as well as emergency rescue services, through a 4.9 inch TFT LCD monitor installed in the vehicle. Furthermore, the customer can make cellular calls, and send short messages, by using the remote controller installed in the steering wheel that creates a hands-free system in the vehicle.
To use the service, customers have to choose the option of the ’intelligent information navigation system’ (INS300, Price: 990 thousand Korean won), when they purchase a vehicle in the SM5 series. They then have to subscribe to the NATE Drive Service at an SK Telecom branch office or sales outlet.
The NATE Drive service rate plans consist of the ’Premium Rate Plan’ (monthly flat rate: 20,000 won) for large call traffic users, and the ’Regular Rate Plan’ (monthly flat rate: 9,000 won) for small call traffic users. Currently only one handset, the SCH V-300 of Samsung Electronics, is available for the service.
