Automatic Roaming Service will be offered to 162 cities in 22 provinces of China.
The service will also be expanded from 80 cities, to 635 cities in 42 states in the U.S.
Customers who use 011 and 017 cellular services, now can make cellular calls on the top of Baekdu Mountain in China, with the original handsets and numbers they use in Korea.
In addition to serving 80 cities in China, SK Telecom will start offering CDMA Automatic Roaming Service in 82 more cities and their neighboring areas, beginning on the 11th of August. This includes Haelpin City in Heirungjang Province and Yenji City in Jirin Province.
SK Telecom has announced that 011 and 017 cellular customers can now make cellular calls from the top of Baekdu Mountain and its surrounding areas in Yenji City, with the original handsets and numbers they used in Korea. Recently lots of Korean tourists have visited Yenji City which is a self-governed city of Yenben Korean Chinese.
SK Telecom first launched Automatic Roaming Service in the 7 major cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzou, Kwangzou, Kunming, Urumuchi, and Hainandao in China, on the 27th of May 2002. In November of 2002, the company expanded its service area to 43 cities including Tenjin, Chintao, Seunchun, and Seunyang. SK Telecom offered the service to an additional 30 cities in May of this year. Now, customers are allowed to use the service in a total of 162 cities in 22 provinces of China.
SK Telecom also expanded the service area to 555 more cities in the U.S. This includes Waterloo, Everdin, Springfield, and Saint Louis. Previously the company provided the service in 80 cities of the U.S. including Washington DC, New York, LA, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, and Honolulu.
Due to the expansion of the service at this time, SK Telecom customers who visit the U.S. can enjoy Automatic Roaming Service in a total of 635 cities in 42 states and their neighboring areas. This will contribute to an increase in user numbers for this service.
The usage fee rate for the Automatic Roaming Service can vary slightly depending on the call time period. In China, the rate is 501 Korean won per minute for calls inside China, and 1,897 won per minute is charged for making calls to Korea. When customers receive calls from Korea, they will be charged 1,234 to 1,359 won per minute (1 yian = 143 Korean won). In the U.S., the local call rate is 355~485 won per minute, and 1,303~1,469 won per minute will be charged for making calls to Korea. When customers receive calls from Korea, they will be charged 513~657 won per minute (1 US dollar = 1,185 Korean won).
Currently SK Telecom is providing CDMA Automatic Roaming Service in 10 regions. These are the U.S., China, Japan, Thailand, Canada, Hong Kong, Saipan Island, Australia, New Zealand, and Guam. The company is also offering ’Written Message Automatic Roaming Service’ to its customers in the 6 regions of Guam, Saipan Island, Japan, China, Thailand and Hong Kong. At the same time, free SK Telecom Calling Number Identification Service for the company’s cellular subscribers is provided in 7 regions, including the U.S, China, Thailand, Guam, Saipan Island, Hong Kong and New Zealand.
SK Telecom is operating Automatic Roaming Service Booths on the 1st and 3rd floors of the Incheon International Airport, 1st floor of Gimhae International Airport, and 1st floor of Cheju Airport. Further, in order to conveniently use the service in the holiday season, the company is offering the service guide at the Automatic Roaming Zone located next to Departure Gate 12, on the 3rd floor of Incheon International Airport until August 20th, 2003.
