Net income of KRW548.2 billion was recorded on total sales of KRW2.39 trillion. Operating income came to KRW816.8 billion.
Net income and total sales increased 22% and 6% respectively and operating income increased 9% over the 1st quarter of 2003.
The increase of call traffic volume and wireless Internet sales, in accordance with the expanding cellular subscriber base, greatly contributed to these remarkable business results.

On July 31st, SK Telecom announced that the company achieved a net income of KRW548.2 billion and total sales of KRW2.39 trillion for the 2nd quarter of 2003. In addition, operating income came to KRW816.8 billion.
Net income and total sales increased 22% and 6% respectively, and operating income increased 9% over the 1st quarter of 2003. Compared to the 2nd quarter of 2002, net income and total sales increased 19% and 13% respectively, and operating income increased 16%.
The total number of SK Telecom cellular subscribers as of June 30th 2003, was 17.86 million, up 230 thousand subscribers over the 1st quarter of 2003. The monthly average revenue per user (ARPU), recorded KRW44,841, increasing KRW1,946 from the 1st quarter of 2003. This was largely due to the increased volume of value-added service usage like ’Free Call Package’. These are the important factors that explain the remarkable business results in the 2nd quarter of 2003.
An SK Telecom official said that sales in the cellular voice sector in the 2nd quarter of 2003 came to KRW1.54 trillion, 10% above the 1st quarter of 2003, and a 12% increase over the 1st quarter of 2002. Moreover, the wireless Internet sales recorded KRW305.7 billion, up 15% over the 1st quarter of 2003, and a 91% increase over the same period last year. This shows that the SK Telecom wireless Internet area is sustaining continued growth in the market.
The number of color handsets held by subscribers in the 2nd quarter of 2003 was 7.69 million, an increase of 24% over the first quarter of 2003. In addition, the number of 1X handset-held subscribers reached 12.37 million, up 11% from the 1st quarter of 2003. Thanks to these increases, the ARPU of the wireless Internet service recorded KRW 5,743, a 13%increase over the 1st quarter of 2003.
In this connection, sales of wireless Internet services in the 2nd quarter of 2003, increased to 14% compared to the 9% recorded in the 1st quarter of 2003. This further proves SK Telecom’s wireless Internet services such as June, MMS, and NATE, keep solidifying their positions as new growth engines for the company’s entire business sector.
In accordance with these outstanding business results, SK Telecom’s EBITDA margin, that shows its capability of cash generation, was 50% in the first quarter of 2003. This was up 4% from 45% in the fourth quarter of 2002, which was an increase of 1% over the 49% recorded in the 1st quarter of 2003. This figure exceeded the company’s goal of a 48% EBITDA margin for this year.
