Multimedia services for wireless transmission of text and video
A cyber office usable "anytime, any place"
Extensive applications: online banking and easy credit card inquiry
SK Telecom (President: Jung Uck Seo) announced that it offers nationwide CDMA-based 011 digital wireless data transmission services starting August 10.
This state-of-the-art service will enable wireless transmission of text and video using Speed 011 cellular phone hooked up to any notebook PCs, handheld PCs or a PDA or personal digital assistant. Previously, data transmission was completely dependent on phone lines and modems. By extending the transmission technology into wireless, the company seems to have taken a firm step toward the provision of the next generation telecom service IMT-2000.
The existing wireless data transmission service has a weakness that it has limited service areas, but SK Telecom has freed the service from it by capitalizing its know-how in wireless network operation and securing stable and seamless delivery of service.
The service allows users to connect to and browse any online communications services or the Internet via the company’s cellular network or to exchange email.
This is expected to be especially useful to salespeople, servicing personnel or people on a business trip, because they cannot usually stay in the office to use their desktop computers hooked up to a phone line and a modem. The new service will provide these people with a cyber office where they can log on to their company host computer via their cell phone and access the information they need without the limitations of time and place.
The service will also enable cyber banking, online marketing of insurance or automobile, online customer service, quick and easy transmission of files, credit card inquiry and online stock trading.
The service requires a digital cellular handset with an installed wireless data transmission capability and linking cable. No special subscription procedure is needed and users can log on to the service by pressing 1501. There are no additional charges and a 30% discount on the regular call rates apply.
The company wants to improve and add new features to the service on a continual basis. The new features include fax, logistics services, tele-monitoring, geographical positioning and enhanced wireless multimedia services enabling the transmission of voice, text and video.
