Press Release
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics were the suppliers finally chosen after an exhaustive study of the detailed technological specifications.
On the 23rd of May, SK Telecom announced that the company has finally selected Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics as the equipment suppliers for launching the company’s commercial asynchronous IMT-2000 service.
According to SK Telecom, it made an initial decision this past January to select the two domestic equipment manufacturers over the foreign bidder Nortel. SK Telecom official said the final decision was made based on various factors, including service function, procurement conditions, interoperability between systems and equipment, and the Dual Band Dual Mode (DBDM) terminal interconnectivity function, as well as consideration of other technological aspects.
By procuring equipment and systems from Samsung Electronics, SK Telecom plans to launch the commercial service in Seoul by the end of this year. The company will soon decide the service area in which the equipment supplied by LG Electronics will be installed. Furthermore, SK Telecom said that Nortel is not completely out of the picture, and that they will continue to discuss such matters as service function, procurement conditions, interoperability between systems and equipment, and the Dual Band Dual Mode (DBDM) terminal interconnectivity function with Nortel as a possible negotiable supplier.
With the final selection of equipment providers, SK Telecom is able to fully prepare for launching the commercial service by the end of 2003. Further, the company expects to accelerate the technological development of WCDMA commercial systems, equipment, and terminals.
