Press Release
The company, together with China Unicom, donated cellular phones to the medical staff working on SARS treatment and prevention.
This donation is expected to contribute to the prevention of SARS by allowing the medical staff to exchange treatment information at a rapid pace through cellular phones.
On the 17th of May, SK Telecom announced that the company and China Unicom have donated 500 cellular phones and prepaid calling cards worth 2 million yian (190 million Korean won) to the segment of the medical staff of China’s Department of Health who are working in the frontlines in Beijing to contain SARS.
This is in line with the celebration of "International Telecommunications Day" (May 17th), in which both companies expect that their donations will help the medical professionals to quickly exchange treatment information, as well as allow patients who are placed in quarantine to contact their families.
SK Telecom has donated its model SKY IM-5000 cellular phones, which are CDMA 1X color phones equipped with a digital camera and supported by China Unicom’s photo-mail and graphic transmission service. Each prepaid calling card donated by China Unicom carries a value of 500 yian (about 72.5 thousand Korean won). Users are allowed to make calls for about 800 minutes with this card.
An official from China’s Department of Health expressed heart-felt thanks to both companies for the donation and said, "This donation will play an important role as cutting-edge communication tools to aid in the prevention of SARS".
"We expect that the donation of cellular phones and prepaid calling cards will greatly contribute to the prevention of SARS, and give a helping hand that allows the medical staff to fulfill their job efficiently. We also hope that SARS can be exterminated as soon as possible" commented Moon Soo Pyo, president of SK Telecom.
This donation has given SK Telecom the opportunity to project a favorable corporate image to the Chinese general public, as well as the Chinese press. In addition, this is providing potential customers in China an opportunity to directly experience a variety of CDMA 1X services.
