SK Telecom Achieves Great Results from Implementing Information Promotion Projects Designed to Help Those On the Margin of Society who Are Often Left Out of the Information Loop.

Donated PCs and peripherals to 6,040 households of orphaned teenagers with younger siblings to care for.
Internet Search Contests for physically challenged youth became important events nationwide, in special schools for disabled youth.???
SK Telecom accomplished great achievements by carrying out social contribution activities under the slogan of ’Opening Up a Happy Communication World’. These charitable activities have remained focused on resolving the digital divide for those people on the margins of society who often become left out of the information loop.
Through the ’2002 SK Telecom Social Contribution Report’ published on May 14, SK Telecom revealed that the company has donated Pentium IV PCs and peripherals to 6,040 households of orphaned teenager with younger siblings to care for. According to the report, the number of households of orphaned teenagers, registered to the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW), totaled 7,184 in the year 2000.
The company donated PCs to 5210 households plus 830 households of orphaned teenagers that were additionally registered with the MOHW.
Furthermore, the report indicated that SK Telecom Internet Search Contests for physically challenged youth have been playing an important role in illustrating that there are no obstacles to success in cyber space.
The contests have become big festivals at special schools for disabled youth nationwide. The disabled students and teachers from 134 special schools nationwide have shown a great deal of enthusiasm in preparing to participate in the contests this year.
In the 4th Internet Search Contest held in 2002, 304 disabled students from 94 special schools participated. This showed remarkable growth compared to the 1st contest in 1999, in which 130 students from 46 special schools took part. A total of 915 disabled students from 134 schools nationwide have competed in the contests over the last four years.
In addition, the ’SK Telecom Internet Survival Competition’ for disabled youth, that was first held in 2000, has been held 4 years in a row. This competition is a survival experiencing game that requires physically challenged youth to survive for 100 hours, using only wire-line and wireless Internet, while being isolated from society. The Internet Survival Competition greatly helps disabled youth increase their spirit of challenge, and their capability to fully overcome their disabilities and adapt to our information-based society.
The ’2002 SK Telecom Social Contribution Report’ revealed that SK Telecom and the Korea Digital Divide Council, opened Korea’s first e-Library for disabled people named "Opendigital" in August 2002.
Moreover, in November 2002, the company donated voice recognition programs called ’Eve’ to students and teachers of 11 special schools for visually impaired youth The report also presents SK Telecom’s vision and direction for its social contribution activities, and contains a description of a variety of its activities. These include holding ’Camps of Love and Hope’ for orphaned teenagers who support their siblings, donating "Love Rice" for less fortunate neighbors, donating mobile medical bus units, carrying out flood relief, donating ’Kimchi of Love’ and furnishing medical support for Vietnamese children, among others.
In particular, the report carries warm stories and photos of physically challenged youth and orphaned teenagers who support their siblings, who had developed new relationships with the SK Telecom staff while participating in the venue of the company’s social contribution activities.
In these stories, they wrote about the hope and confidence they have gained through participating in these activities.
In 2003, SK Telecom has been implementing additional social contribution activities for disabled people and needy people such as helping them find employment and launch small businesses on their own, and supporting them to maintain their normal family functions for social integration.
At the same time, the company will promote and support the volunteer group’s corporate philanthropy activities, thereby putting into practice "The Heart of Togetherness" exhibited by all SK Telecom members.
Moon Soo Pyo, president of SK Telecom, stated in the report publication; "We expect that this report will lay the groundwork for encouraging people to have further interest, and give even greater helping hands, to our needy neighbors who are in the shadows of society.
We also hope that the culture of sharing with one another, and living harmoniously together, will be established in every corner of our society.
