SK Telecom Plans to Launch Weather Disaster News Broadcasting using a Satellite DMB.
2003.04.16 PrintStrives to prevent possible disasters, and/or minimize damage caused by abnormal changes in weather.
Provides a wide range of additional services such as urgent message transmission, automatic alarm system, etc.
Will collaborate with the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) in varied weather broadcasting fields, including weather-related content development.
"The damage from heavy rains and typhoons is expected to be greatly reduced due to early weather alert broadcasting through personal mobile terminals".
SK Telecom (www.sktelecom.com) announced that on April 17th, 2003 in the KMA Head Office, Moon Soo Pyo, president of SK Telecom, and Myung Hwan Ahan, administrator of KMA (www.kma.go.kr) will sign an agreement to provide weather disaster news broadcasting through Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB).
Previously, SK Telecom and the KMA agreed to offer these broadcasts through a variety of channels of Satellite DMB service. They are designed to prevent possible disasters, and minimize damage caused by abnormal changes in weather, such as heavy rain, snow, or typhoons.
Sang Gil Lee, head of SK Telecom’s PMSB Business Group, stated "Customers can receive reports on urgent weather conditions through their personal mobile terminals, under circumstances in which they cannot watch conventional weather broadcasting programs, because the Satellite DMB service transmits streaming video and voice signals to the terminals through the satellite.
As a result, customers are able to swiftly cope with sudden disaster occurrences such as the flood in the Young-dong area, and heavy rain in the Jiri Mountains".
"In addition, SK Telecom will continue to transmit urgent weather reports more effectively, by adding a wide range of additional service functions, such as urgent message transmission and automatic alarms, to the terminals for the Satellite DMB service" he added.
With the aim of making a maximum contribution to public welfare through this new weather broadcasting service, SK Telecom and the KMA also agreed to strengthen the cooperative ties in varied weather broadcasting fields, including weather-related content development.
The Satellite DMB service transmits weather broadcasting content through a satellite.
This lets customers watch weather broadcasting programs via personal mobile receiver, or vehicle receiver, while on the move.
Currently, the relevant Ministry is undergoing the development of laws and specific policies regarding the service. SK Telecom has been preparing to implement this Satellite DMB service business, with the goal of launching the service by the 1st part of 2004.
