Press Release
Increased automatic roaming service to 50 cities in the U.S. and China respectively.
Plans to have automatic roaming service in Guam, Mexico, Peru, and Israel, by the end of this year.
Furnished additional roaming booths on the third floor of Incheon International Airport for the convenience of departing passengers. SK Telecom announced a huge expansion of automatic roaming service beginning on the 7th of November. This expansion plan includes a continuing increase of CDMA automatic roaming service areas in the U.S. and China, and installing additional roaming booths at Incheon International Airport.
Due to the expansion of the CDMA automatic roaming service areas in the U.S. and China, 011 and 017 cellular subscribers can now use the same handset and number they use in Korea, in 50 major nationwide cities in the U.S. and China.
The CDMA Automatic Roaming service started on the 23rd of May at 19 major U.S. cities including Washington DC, New York, LA, Boston, Seattle, and Honolulu. This service will be rapidly expanded to 50 cities nationwide in the U.S., excluding Florida and Alaska.
In China, this service began on the 27th of May in the 7 major cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzou, Kwangzou, Kunming, Urumuchi, and Hainandao. It will soon be expanded to 50 major cities nationwide in China, including Tenjin, Chintao, Seunchun, Seunyang and Jirin.
The CDMA Automatic Roaming service is available almost everywhere in Japan, the U.S., and China due to the expansion of CDMA service in the U.S and China and considering the fact that the service is already provided nationwide in Japan. This covers the three countries Korean tourists visit the most.
SK Telecom plans to start the CDMA Automatic Roaming service in Guam, Mexico, Peru, and Israel by the end of this year, and by the first quarter of next year, will provide the service in Thailand and Taiwan. Adding this plan to the areas already serviced enables the forming of a CDMA Automatic Roaming Belt that connects 12 Asian Pacific countries which include the U.S., China, Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong.
In addition to expanding the international service areas, the company is also increasing its service at Incheon International Airport in preparation for the rapid growth in international roaming demands. On top of the existing
International Roaming Center at the first floor of entrance area, the company will add international roaming service booths on the third floor of the departure area that provide NAM (Number Assignment Module) settings for automatic roaming.
To better serve customers who have an older model handset that can not support automatic roaming service when they travel overseas, SK Telecom also provides a temporary exchange service from old model devices to newer ones that can support automatic roaming service.
