"The three mobile communication service providers agreed to maintain a close cooperative relationship while working to commercialize the Wireless Internet Platform Standard called WIPI".
SK Telecom, KTF, and LG Telecom announced their plan to commercialize the Wireless Internet Platform Standard, called WIPI by the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA), by the first part of 2004. They plan to launch a pilot service in November or December of this year. To this end, they will develop WIPI-installed handsets at an early stage.
In addition, the three companies agreed to determine standards for bilateral certification, and to develop bilateral certification tools, by forming the WIPI Commercialization Council. The main role of the Council is to commercialize WIPI and provide interoperability between mobile communication carriers.
The three companies also plan to develop Killer Application Programs for JAVA (SK Telecom, LG Telecom)/BREW(KTF) converted to function on the WIPI. This will allow customers to use existing content through the WIPI-installed handset. To this end, they are considering introducing a WIPI application program that is under development as a project by TTA.
In order to maximize the interoperability of the WIPI platform that is under development by SK Telecom, LG Telecom and KTF, the WIPI Commercialization Council will conduct bilateral certification functions.
Moreover, each of the three companies will directly carry out platform certification functions by complying with the Council’s certification standard when launching WIPI terminals. They also agreed to certification plans in discussions with the TTA in order to implement a fair and clear certification function.
