Press Release
The largest single unit contact for cellular phone export to China in the history of Korean cellular phone industry.
This outstanding result in China came right after SK Telecom’s cooperation in network and wireless Internet with Chinese telecommunication companies.
SK Teletech (www.skteletech.co.kr) announced the signing of an MOU with China Unicom, the largest CMDA service provider in China, that calls for SK Teletech to supply one million CDMA2000 1X handsets to China Unicom by March 2003 through China Chung Hung Telecom.
SK Telectech’s handset exportation to China is the largest single unit order in Korean cellular phone industry history. This remarkable achievement by SK Telectech, the backbone of national device manufacturers, bore fruit due to SK Group’s continuing efforts to launch into, and successfully grow, in the Chinese communication market.
This contract for exporting one million devices is only the order quantity to be filled by March of 2003, and the company expects that its size will be far exceeded by the end of 2003. The first export product to be provided is the SKY IM-5000 model with 65,000 colors and 40 poly which has a high quality external type of camera introduced in Korean market. SK Telectech then plans to supply the next advanced model product, which will soon be in the national market, by modifying it to fit the conditions in China.
Min Seung Yoon, head of SK Telectech’s Marketing Strategy Division, commented "SK Telectech is not yet fully competitive with the world’s best and biggest companies in terms of business size or scale, but we have been accumulating top level technologies and excellent business strategies. As a clear example, SKY products have successfully won and occupied a large share of the national market. SK Telectech keeps striving to develop high quality products that are far advanced and distinct from other companies’ products. China Unicom agreed to become a business partner due to recognizing our potential power and valuable qualities which closely align with its own business strategies." " SK Teletech has a strong plan to actualize a second SKY Legend in the Chinese market, the same as in the national market, by focusing on the high level market segment."
This deal for supplying products is going to be done with a Chinese business partner named Jung Hung Telecom. Through this strategic affiliation, SK Telectech undertakes the developing and producing of products and Jung Hung Telecom will be in charge of sales and A/S in the Chinese market.
The contract for SK Teletech to supply one million handsets to China Unicom following Samsung Electronic’s contract providing 700 thousand, is official approval by China of our national technology for manufacturing the handsets as the world’s best. This fact should encourage other domestic companies to accelerate their launch into the Chinese market.
This remarkable success in the telecommunication field in the Chinese market is a result of SK Teletech’s contract for supplying handsets devices, followed by SK Telecom’s deal with China Unicom for cooperative affiliation of network and wireless Internet, This invites a strong advancement of the SK into the Chinese telecommunication market and a flourishing trade relationship between Korea and China.
