The e-Library called "Opendigital" designed for the exclusive use of disabled people was launched for the first time in Korea.
"Opendigital (www.opendigital.or.kr)", which was implemented by the Korea Digital Divide Council under the sponsorship of SK Telecom, will be opened, and its opening ceremony will be held, in the hall of the National Assembly Library at 10 a.m. on the 22nd of August 2002.
Seong Jae Kim, Minister of Culture and Tourism, and Tae Hyun Kim, Vice-minister of Information and Communication, will participate in this opening ceremony.
As one of its many social contribution activities, SK Telecom donated 700 million Korean won to the Korea Digital Divide Council in order to aid in building the e-Library for disabled people on the Internet in September of last year. Now, these efforts are crowned with success.
The "Opendigital on the Internet" is equipped with a function of "Voice Book Viewer" that allows visually disabled people to easily listen to the text of entire books kept in the e-Library. This is a first for Korea. In addition, many functions, such as automatic text focusing, interoperability with special devices used by other disabled people, and Braille type printing, are available for the convenience of all disabled people.
The "Opendigital" is designed to help disabled people freely gain access to information through the Internet, and overcome their difficulties in education and modern living, so the information gap between disabled and non-disabled people will be abolished in this digital era. To obtain free access, all disabled people should be confirmed as a member of the e-Library. The company expects that about 130
thousand disabled persons will use this e-Library which has more than 10,000 books.
The e-Library is equipped with multimedia functions such as a screen voice reader for people with visual disabilities, and caption processing, the finger language, and VOD for people with hearing impairments. Moreover, there is a vast array of sites such as goods, and articles for the use of disabled and elderly people, as well as academic, scientific and research data related to disabilities in the e-Library. Therefore, any disabled person can enjoy a variety of cultural and social Information in their own location, through the e-Library.
SK Telecom has always been putting forth its best efforts to carry out social contribution activities to aid those people who are lost in the shadows of society. In particular, since 1998 the company has fulfilled its social responsibilities by focusing on activities such as information technology training for disabled youth, and orphaned teenagers who support their siblings.
