A Leading Cellular Service Provider in Korea
The World’s 8th Largest Service Provider
Now with more than 5 million subscribers to its cellular phone service, SK Telecom(President: Jung Uck Seo) became the 8th largest mobile communications service provider in the world.
SK Telecom said on May 26 that the number of its subscribers reached 5 million(1.061 million to analogue service, 3.944 million to digital service, as of May 25) only 9 months after the number passed the 4 million mark in September 1997. The company began to offer the service from 1984 and has played an important role in enlarging the user base in the domestic market.
This is testimony of the fact that SK Telecom’s large service coverage and the superb call quality based on its 15 year experience in mobile communications continued to attract many users even when the economy is still struggling and the demand is on a decline after the IMF bailout, and the competition between the service providers are getting overheated.
With 5 million subscribers, the company now ranks as the 8th largest service provider. The figure also means that 11% of the 46 million Koreans(a quarter of the economically active population), and 36% of the 14 million households(one in three households) are using SK Telecom’s Speed 011 cellular service.
SK Telecom expects that it can become the 6th largest cellular service provider in the world overtaking prominent US carriers such as Bell Atlantic and Southwestern Bell later this year if the present growth rate continues.
Since 1984 when it first offered the service, SK Telecom has deployed a variety of marketing schemes such as guarantee insurance system, rate cuts and the "Best&Best" campaign. Its sustained efforts to offer the service in a wider area and improve the call quality resulted in the mass acceptance of the service.
The company has consolidated its leading position within the industry with the launch of NetsGo Internet access service last year and the Iridium service - satellite mobile telephony - in September, and the development of IMT-2000, the next generation video mobile communication.
SK Telecom celebrated the success at a ceremony held at the Namdaemun headquarters on May 25 to which the 5 millionth customer was invited. The company is also planning a variety of ways to publicize and celebrate reaching 5 million subscribers, which include a 20% discount for calls between Speed 011 users.
SK Telecom is seeking a government approval for this rate reduction of 20% from 26 won to 21 won per ten seconds. The 5 millionth customer will be exempted from being charged for the basic fees for a year and given 5,000-minutes of free call time. The company also plans to hold the "Speed 011 Guinness Record Contest" to give the similar benefits to the longest-term user, the family using the greatest number of circuits, the oldest user and the user with the oldest handset. The company is also commending the local offices and sales personnel with excellent records.
