On the 24th of this month, SLD Telecom(footnote 1), in which SK Telecom (www.sktelecom.com) and LG Electronics, (www.lge.com) are major shareholders announced that SLD Telecom acquired the CDMA cellular phone service business license directly from the Cambodian government.
According to this agreement, SK Telecom is able to build and operate this cellular phone business through the world’s best CDMA technology and know-How. The service will be offered nationwide in Cambodia for 35 years using an assigned 10.2Mhz bi-directional frequency bandwidth on 800Mhz.
By the middle of this year, SLD Telecom will construct the CDMA service network in the main cities in Cambodia starting with Phnom Penh, and will begin the commercial service during the latter part of this year. SK Telecom will operate the service and LG Electronics will supply the main system.
On the morning of the 24th Cambodia time, Sok An, vice-prime minister, So Khun, minister of MPTC (Cambodian Ministry of Information and Communication), Jun Dong Bae, president of SLD Telecom (Head of SK Telecom Global Marketing Division), Hyo Jin Choi, managing directior of SK Telecom (Head of SK Telecom Global Business Office) and Chang Hyung Kang, managing directior of LG Electronics participated in the joint ceremony of the agreement granting the CDMA cellular phone business license. Then as they celebrated this historic event they discussed the further development of information and communication in Cambodia.
SK Telecom and LG Electronics are trying to occupy more than 20% of the cellular phone market share as a short term goal by using their accumulated expertise and experience in mobile communication and outstanding CDMA 2000 1X technlolgy. As a mid and long term goal, they will particpate in cutting-edge telecommunication fields like IMT-2000, while growing into a number one telecommunication operator.
Within two years SK Telecom will acquire a superior position in the ranks of existing business providers through aggressive investment in equipment and facilities. In addition, the company will expand the concept of CDMA, and provide the world’s best call quality and other communication services with a variety of supplemental services.
Also, the company will be using the same CDMA2000 1X equipment in Cambodia as it is using in Vietnam. This can create a remarkable synergistic effect by connecting it with the CDMA business in Vietnam.
In last August, SLD Telecom obtained final approval of the CDMA cellular phone service business in Vietnam. The company plans to launch the CDMA cellular phone service during the second half of this year. Now that SK Telecom is able to provide CDMA cellular phone service in Cambodia, the export of a wide array of telecommunication equipment (including CDMA terminals), led by LG Electronics, will occur. This will have a positive effect on the domestic telecommunication equipment industry.
Starting the CDMA cellular phone service in Cambodia has great significance in terms of building one Asian CDMA belt that embraces such countries as Korea, China, Japan, Cambodia, and Vietnam. SK Telecom will continually pursue its plan for building one Asia CDMA belt that widely connects Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand in Indochina Peninsula, and Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
SK Telecom sees bright prospects for the growth of the mobile communication business in Cambodia due to the fact that the cellular phone use nationwide is less than 1.83%. Also, 69% of the population is in the younger age group up to their twenties and 82% of the total population is under thirty. These segments of the population have a greater interest in mobile communication. This is evidenced by a 77% increase in the number of cellular phone subscribers over the last 6 years. In addition, the geographic and economic conditions in Cambodia favor the prospect of wireless communication growing much faster than wired communication.
