2001.12.03 PrintThe same cellular handset and number can be used to send and receive calls in Korea, Canada and New Zealand.
"011 and 017 cellular phone calls are now available in Canada and New Zealand" 011 and 017 customers can send and receive cellular phone calls with the same handset and number in Canada and New Zealand as well as in Australia, Japan, and Hong Kong.
SK Telecom (www.sktelecom.com) and Shinsegi Telecom (www.shinsegi.com) announced that they would start commercial CDMA automatic roaming services in Canada and New Zealand, starting on December 3. This was followed by the CDMA automatic roaming service agreement concluded among SK Telecom, Shinsegi Telecom, TELUS Mobility of Canada, and Telecom Mobile of New Zealand in September of this year.
As a result of this, 011 and 017 subscribers can use automatic roaming services in 11 principal cities of the western area of Canada and the entire New Zealand region. Users simply call SK Telecom and Shinsegi Telecom?s branch offices or Roaming Centers at the airport to apply for this service. And then they set their cellular handset for automatic roaming services.
The automatic roaming service is much more economical than conventional roaming services because users are not burdened with additional subscription fee and basic monthly fee. They pay only the call charge itself. SK Telecom conveniently offers this service to users without requiring such procedures as a previous reservation for cellular handset prior to departure from a country and a restoration of handsets after returning home.
The roaming service call fee charged by TELUS Mobility of Canada is US$0.56 (including tax) per minute to place a call inside Canada, US$0.91 a minute to make long distance calls and US$2.63 a minute to make international call to Korea. Telecom Mobile of New Zealand will charge US$0.41 per minute to make a local and long distance call inside New Zealand, and US$1.52 a minute to place a international call to Korea.
At present, SK Telecom is providing rent-roaming services in 120 countries since it launched Korea?s first international roaming service in the U.S. in June 1996. Furthermore, the company launched the CDMA automatic roaming service in Hong Kong, Japan, Canada, and New Zealand, starting the service in Australia in September 2000.
Furthermore, SK Telecom plans to provide the CDMA automatic roaming service in China by February 2002 and the U.S. by the second quarter of 2001. In the near future, the roaming service will be expanded to Vietnam and Mongolia, as well as other countries in Latin America.
