Press Release
Consortium Alga, of which SK Telecom(President: Jung Uck Seo) is a member, won a license to operate cellular telephone services in the Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo.
Brazilian Ministry of Communication announced March 30 that the Algar Consortium whose members include SK Telecom won the bid for cellular license to serve the License Area 3, consisting of two states that includes the city of Rio de Janeiro, the No.2 city in Brazil. With a population of 16 million, License Area 3 is considered to be one of the most attractive cellular license areas in Brazil, along with Area 1 which includes Sao Paolo, due to its economic growth potential and large waiting list for the cellular service.
Consortium Alga which also includes Lightel, Brazilian wired phone service carrier, will designate Equipment vendor until May, and go on building system network so as to launch CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access) digital cellular phone service beginning January next year.
Through its U.S. subsidiary SKTI, SK Telecom will have a control over 20% of voting shares in the new venture, and will provide Technology & Business services. SK Telecom will dispatch technicians and service management team to Brazil after Equipment vendor selection.
Brazil has a great potential with its 170 billion population -its cellular phone users, currently about 2 million, are expected to increase five times by the year 2000- and is now where the action is. Consortium Alga won the concession upsetting other consortia led by big name companies like AT&T, Airtouch, SBC and France Telecom.
SK Telecom commented on this occasion that "winning rights to operate in the area with the greatest potential amid heavy competition proves Korea’s technology and service prowess in CDMA technology" and expected spill-over effects in domestic industry as Korean vendors have high chances of getting selected as Terminal provider
