Two national companies (Samsung Electronics / LG Electronics) and five international companies including Nokia / Nortel, etc.
To put emphasis on interoperability and linkage between Existing mobile communication equipment and its network
On November 26, SKIMT as a third generation asynchronized mobile communication operator announced that the company selected 7 collaborating companies for developing WCDMA equipment and started full-scale development of the third generation mobile communication equipment.
Six companies of LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Nokia, Nortel, Alkatel, and Ericcson are designated to develop the switching equipment sector by SKIMT. 7 companies-all of the above companies plus Motorola, are designated to develop the base station equipment sector.
These selected companies will develop the trial environment in the Network research Center located at Bundang City by the end of March 2002, then collaborate in developing technology, verifying, and testing. Based on the outcome of this developed technology, SKIMT will select asynchronous IMT-2000 equipment supplier.
SKIMT already sent a ?Written request form for collaborative development of WCDMA equipment’ on the 4th of September to 5 national companies and 8 international companies. On the 29th of September, the company received and reviewed proposal documents from 4 national companies and 6 international companies.
The company explained that 80 professional engineers participated in the process of selection, and the main criteria for selection were the capability of developing equipment, present condition of development procedures, material sources, and function and quality of systems.
Jong Hawn Shin, the head of the Network Division of SKIMT, commented "We set the testing environment for the WCDMA system in 1999, and since then we have been continually developing its technology standards with the goal of developing and supplying equipment that perfectly accommodates the network linkage and equipment’s interoperability?. ?This selection of collaborating companies accelerated the speed of asynchronous IMT-2000 business preparation? he added.
