The automatic roaming service is much more economical than conventional roaming services because users are not burdened with additional subscription fee and basic monthly fee. They pay only the call charge itself. In addition, 011 and 017 subscribers can have access to the network that covers 11 principal cities of the western area of Canada and the entire New Zealand region. In addition, the automatic roaming service will be available by 2002 in the entire eastern area of Canada, where CDMA cellular service will be provided in 1900MHz bandwidth through Try-mode cellular handsets.
The roaming service call fee charged by TELUS Mobility of Canada is US$0.60 per minute to place a call inside Canada and US$1.08 a minute to make international calls. Telecom Mobile of New Zealand will charge US$0.36 per minute to make a call inside New Zealand.
At present, SK Telecom is providing rent-roaming services in 120 countries since it launched Korea?s first international roaming service in the U.S. in June 1996. Furthermore, the company launched the CDMA automatic roaming service in Hong Kong, Japan, Canada, and New Zealand, starting the service in Australia in September 2000. In the near future, the roaming service will be expanded to China, Vietnam, and Mongolia, as well as many other countries.
