SK Telecom is making interactive high-speed packet data transmission possible through your cellular phone.
SK Telecom is opening up a world where people can communicate on a truly face to face basis via their cellular phones
On August 30th SK Telecom (www.sktelecom.com) announced that the company has completed the development of the world?s first video call service based on the CDMA2000 1X packet network. This service was originally developed by combining mobile Internet protocol (Mobile IP **Note 1) technology with H.323 video communication protocol (**Note 2) technology.
In this connection, SK Telecom will carry out test-bed area services toward the end of this year when the cellular handset for this service can be produced. The company is scheduled to provide the world?s first fully functional high-speed interactive mobile video call service by the first half of next year.
The video call service is the world?s first wireless multimedia service based on packet networking. This service will allow users to have a cellular phone conversation while looking into each other?s faces. Two cellular phones can be used, as well as a cellular phone and personal computer. In order to make this service possible, service operators must always follow the position of the user?s cellular handset as it moves within the coverage of the network system that provides high-speed interactive data communication service. In addition, the operators will have technology that allows the processing of voice signals and moving images at the same time. To comply with these requirements, SK Telecom has set up a mobile IP function in the network system and developed video communication technology through combining the mobile IP function with the H.323 protocol. The company applied for a patent on this technology last May.
In addition, SK Telecom improved the chip function in the cellular handset and installed some additional software in the base station system. This makes it possible to have high-speed data communication in the reverse direction from the CDMA2000 network. Thus, it allows a regular direction speed of 153.6Kbps and a reverse direction speed of 76.8Kbp.
Unlike the existing service based on a video call system based on H.323, this system does not monopolize network resources for each subscriber. Instead it shares them to enhance the effectiveness of network resources. Therefore, this video call service is expected to set the standard for wireless video communication services and its technology will be used for IMT-2000 and 1X EV DO services.
Note1) Mobile IP(Internet Protocol) always monitors the position of each cellular handset by granting an IP address to each cellular handset. The IP consists of a transmitting packet address and the destination?s address.
Note2) H.323 video communication protocol is a wired video communication protocol based on IP that is used for Internet telephone (VoIP) of Saerome Technology.
