SPEED 011 users can now exchange e-mail, data, and voice information wirelessly with overseas cellular phone users.
SK Telecom will first start offering wireless data roaming service to Hutchison Telecom?s cellular phone service users in Hong Kong, then beginning early next year expand its service range to the U.S., Japan, and China.
SK Telecom (www.sktelecom.com) announced on August 22 that the company would provide the world?s first CDMA-based wireless data access roaming service beginning August 23. This service enables SPEED 011 users to enjoy automatic wireless data roaming as well as voice call roaming.
SK Telecom?s wireless data access roaming service will be provided by working with Huchison Telecom(**Note). In additionto existing voice automatic roaming service, this service will allow users to send and receive data at a maximum speed of64Kbps by connecting to SK Telecom’s IS-95B Network.
The cellular phone service users of Hutchison Telecom who visit Korea, can be provided this same service as well as e-mail and information searching by connecting a CDMA terminal to a notebook computer, or inserting a wireless PCMCIA(Free Wing)Card to a notebook computer. The users of this service are charged the same calling rate as the voice rate charged by Hutchison Telecom with no additional subscription or basic fees.
SK Telecom customers will start receiving wireless data access roaming service in Hong Kong by the end of this coming September. SK Telecom has already executed contracts to provide automatic roaming service with KDDI of Japan, SprintPCS of the U.S., Telstra of Australia, and China Unicom of China. These contracts provide for starting wireless data access roaming service in the early part of the year 2002.
