Uplink CoMP increases data upload speeds by 20 percent in base station boundaries, and can be automatically applied to all LTE devices
SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM) today announced that it achieved the world’s first commercialization of Uplink CoMP (Uplink Cooperative Multi-Point), a technology that can significantly enhance mobile data upload speed on the LTE network, under cooperation with NSN (Nokia Solutions and Network), a leading global enabler of mobile services / global leading mobile network equipment maker.
In an area covered by multiple base stations, Uplink CoMP directs that signals from mobile devices are received by not one but multiple base stations, and combines these signals to increase signal strength.
SK Telecom and NSN said that, once applied with the technology, the mobile data upload speeds increased by an average of 20 percent in coverage boundaries.
Moreover, as Uplink CoMP is a technology that is applied to base stations, no upgrade is required for LTE devices. SK Telecom plans to apply the technology to all its LTE base stations within the end of this year.
The company expects Uplink CoMP to significantly increase user convenience as more and more people are choosing to directly upload photos or videos taken with a smartphone to their SNS accounts, or upload video files in their device to the cloud for long-term storage.
Park Jin-hyo, Senior Vice President and Head of Network Technology R&D Center at SK Telecom said, “SK Telecom is pleased to announce the world’s first commercialization of Uplink CoMP, which will dramatically increase the data upload speeds for our LTE customers. Continuous efforts will be made to develop and apply innovative network technologies like Uplink CoMP to provide our customers with greater convenience and differentiated value.”
